I have looked at the various internet packages that are available on-board.

Does anyone have real life suggestions for me? Looking at the amount of data alloted, I cannot translate it into usable frquency.

What packages have you used and how much did you access the internet?

We got the medium one on a 7 night cruise on the Magic and it was too much for us. We had left over on the last day and could not use it all. And you don't get rebates on left overs. We used in on our phones and the computers on the ship. We only used it to check and respond to emails for my husband's business. The first day it seemed we used a lot, but once he turned off the automatic updates on his phone he had plenty use.
Next time we will be getting the smaller package. I think it all depends on what you will be using it for.

We will be on a 3 day so I can't see us using too much. Like you, primarily to check emails for business, etc.

Are you able to Facetime with the internet?

Both me and my wife got sick during our cruise, so we got the 1000 MB package for general internet browsing, facebook, instagram, e-mail, etc. We used up all of the MB, but it took about 6 days, including watching short videos, etc. I don't have a screen capture of it, but when you go to sign up for a package, it shows you some rough guidelines on what the usage numbers mean (i.e. 1000 MB is xx number of photo uploads, xx hours of facebook, xx e-mails, etc.)

You can use Facetime, but it really eats into your MB quickly. Also, they warn you to turn off all automated internet processes on your device before logging on (i.e. backups to the Cloud, automatic app updates, etc.)

12 night cruise four of us used five large internet packages. It's fast but turn of photo steen and auto updates App updates as they eat data fast.

I went on 5 night Wonder Cruise in October and only need the free plus the small paid one. Yet, in January on another 5 night cruise, I used up the same in less than 2 days. I watched the meter go to empty without posting more than 5 e mails. It had something to do with the updates above posters are mentioning. The CM in charge of Internet was more snarky than helpful.

I am going to try to use Internet on the Fantasy in 15 days. Is the update in settings easy to turn off? Are there any precautions to take? I could not get an answer from the CM last month, so I gave up.

I had used Internet on the DVC Member Cruise in August with only the small plan, and then I even sent some pictures home to DH, no problems. Is this "turn off updates" something new?

How many MB is the free package?

I apologize I know this has been discussed before but search still isn't working for me.
Technology and I don't get along real great (see above, haha)
So in real simple terms,
Will Airplane mode disable Auto updates and any other data hoggers? Can i upload a few pics to FB using my free 50MB while in Airplane mode? Or do i need to be more pro-active and turn other stuff off while still in PC before setting sail, so that I can then do any uploading or whatever in Non-Airplane mode?

No You have to go into the phone and disable automatic updates

One idea is to look at your monthly phone bill. It will state how much you've consumed. Then think if your usage will go up or not. I'm a medium user, but know my usage will go up on a trip. Thus I got a 1gb package. That just barely lasted me 7 days.

Is it enough to change the Google Play Store setting to Do Not Update, or are there other things I need to disable too? Thanks!!

I guess I need to disable system updates, not just app updates. And disable data backup on google... i hope that's everything. would be nice if Samsung made a one touch way to do that... oh well. Thanks for the help, hopefully I can remember all this in 2 weeks haha!

Be real careful here. If you have an iPhone there are updates you can turn off and some you can't. App updates can be turned off, but OS updates cannot and can be downloaded anytime your phone is on wifi and plugged in(if they are available). Also note that Airplane mode will turn off your phone, but you can turn wifi back one with airplane mode on. Best to leave the wifi completely off when you are not actively using the phone.

I had an OS upgrade download and used up about 1/2 of my 1 gig

I was able to turn them all off on my IPhone.

we got the 1000 mb package last year on the magic in the Greek islands. Wifi was excellent and very fast. Ended up buying a second medium package too. Only used it for facebook, email and Skype (but skype phone without video connection) in my iPad. And texts from my iphone. I uploaded pictures to facebook and that's what took up MBs. I did turn off automatic uploads. Just a caution...if you have more than one device, try to remember to sign out for one before going on the other. At a couple points, I had both devices on and running. It used to make more of a difference when they charged you for minutes. On the Dream last aug for the DVC cruise, I also got the large package but had time left over. It was shorter cruise, but the connection was also much worse and it became too frustrating to use it as much. And then again in October we were back on the Magic for a chartered Turner Classic Cruise in the Caribbean. The wifi was much better on the magic than the dream in the Caribbean. We used almost all of 1000 MB package in five days. I would think it would be the opposite since the Dream is much newer but the magic seems to have much better service regardless of location.

The bolded part came as a surprise to me, and since I have a lot of experiences with iDevices I was all set to come in here and disagree, because I've been on an older version of iOS by choice for quite some time. But I did some research before typing (very good rule of thumb online). It turns out what happens (and I didn't know this) is that even if you decline the upgrade, the device will still DOWNLOAD the iOS update anyway, so the data is still used, whether you opt to install the upgrade or not. Apparently it really does happen 'behind the scenes'. The trick seems to be that this happens if you have Wifi turned on while connected to a power source. So I guess the easy fix is to turn off wifi or go airplane mode every time you plug your phone in to charge.

I am also technically challenged....how do roaming charges play into this? I think I just turn WiFi on only (turn off cellular data, no data roaming, and disable 3G) and that means no roaming, then the WiFi package available on board is for data only. Is this right? Thanks :)
