Internet on the road

We live out in hill-billyville so there is not great cell phone coverage (and because I'm too cheap to pay for a smart phone). We generally survive fine on just using the internet at home or at a public wifi spot. We are getting ready to head out on our 20 hour drive to Florida. I've heard of some products that allow you to get data usage for a laptop while on the road. Does anyone have a recommendation or experience? I'd want one that does it by amount of data used, not X number of days.

Im sure there are tons of free wifi hotspots along the way. Just about every McDonalds across the country has free wifi

Yeah...I know that, but I'm looking for something that we can have on the road with us so that we don't have to stop.

For a side race chip timing business I have, we use verizon mobile hot spots. Up to 12 devices, short range, long battery life, decent price point and no contract options were all plusses to me.

I am not familiar with this, but I did a quick Google search and found that T-Mobile has a pre-paid plan. Basically, you have to buy the adapter (They have a special going on now where you can get the adapter for $24) and then you can buy a week or month pass with a limited amount of data.

Exactly what I use. Coverage for T-mobile 4G is spotty though on the road.
