Can you all tell me where I can find info on wifi/internet acess at the fort. Or is there a public computer we could use somewhere. This will let me know if need to pack up the laptop or not! Thanks

Jill

WiFi at the porch of Trails End and at the "internet cafe" in the reception outpost.

Or, any site with cable can use the cable for access.

All three options cost $9.95 per day.

No public computer.

Hotels with a business center have public computers, but they charge by the 15 minute period.

To elaborate on Tim's post:

To use internet at a site with cable, you must get an internet access kit from the Outpost. They don't have one for every site so there is a possibility you may have to wait to get one. In our trip last year I wasn't able to get one at check in, but did get on the next day. They also require a deposit when you pick up the kit.

To elaborate on the elaboration, check out this thread for more information than you can possibly use on the Internet service available at the preferred sites:

High Speed internet at the Fort

I used the Internet kit during my May, 2008, visit, and the information on this thread is still accurate.

You might want to invest in an air card. That way, no matter where you camp, you can have the internet. That is what we did.

not at&T?, we have the at&t usb card and so far no trouble, could there be trouble with at&t at the fort? thanks

I didn't keep it long enough to try it at the Fort. It was super slow at home on the PC and was not Vista compatible with the laptop. Their customer service was terrible, and for 2 months after returning it I had to call them because it was still on my phone bill. Sorry for the vent it was a big pain for me.

oh ok, we've had ours (it is a sierra usb connect 881) for 2-3 months now and it works great! sorry to hear about your troubles with it.

I have used both AT$T and Sprint cards at the Fort. AT&T back in 2006 had a strong 3G signal in the 2000 loop, Sprint signal in 1500 was only 1X (same as att edge) , hopefully It will be upgraded by this fall.

I normally have a Verizon air card and it works pretty well at the Fort. This last trip, I used the cable modem in a preferred loop and it worked really well also.

Also, if you have a dialup choice with your internet provider, you can go to the Outpost and plug into their regular phone line and use the internet that way. Just make sure you find the local dial up number for the area. There is no charge for that, but it is reaaaaaalllllly slow.
