What are the cons and pros of going from cable to DSL for our internet provider? It would save us a good amount of money each month but I am afraid to make the jump. Will I hate it, is it too slow?......HELP!

The DSL server we are looking at is SBC DSL Pro. Does anyone use it now? How do you like it? :confused3

We currently have SBC DSL and LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! Its super fast and IMHO is way better than cable.

Hey thanks for you response! :cool1:

I called them again today and they say we can have a 30 day trial period. That will make DH happy incase he does not like it!

How complicated was it to set up and what equipment did you need? I understand they mail you something but I am not really certain how it all works!

Cant answer the question with your ISP however, its the same to hook up dsl as it was cable.

Ethernet cable from your pc to the modem, phone line- to the modem, ummmm oh- power cord to the jack......thats it...

You will need to put filters on all phone lines that do NOT go to the modem...thats about it

I switched from Cable to DSL- basically for cost. Cable was 54.99 a month, plus 3.95 modem etc.. dsl here is 34.77 a month THATS IT....plus I bundled my phone in with it- and my phone is 26.00 with taxes etc.. my bill is still WAY under $65...

I have noticed NO speed changes. With cable- if your neighborhood is all on cable- they're all on "your" cable...with DSL- your on your own dsl...

ok I just ordered dsl from sbc for $19.99 amonth for a year. How can I tell if I have enthernet? this is a little new for me.

What are the filters for? Where do you get them and what do they cost? :confused3

We just switched to DSL from Verizon for about $34.00 a month. To do cable was approximately $55 a month and I know people in my area who have problems with it.

The DSL company should provide the filters to you at no charge.

Ethernet is the huge cable that looks like a phone cable. It plugs into the back of your computer...near the phone cable plug.

If you dont have ethernet you'll have to run USB.

The filters- will come from the DSL company, they're just little things that plug into the phone line, then the phone simple really, little plastic thingies..

what if the back of my computer does not have a place to hook the ethernet cable? What would I need? :confused3

If you have DSL you need filters on your regular telephones- simple- phug your phone cord into the filter and the filter into the wall jack. Without the filter you will hear tons of static on the line. Your modem or router will plus into the jack with no filter- (it needs that static)
They come free from your DSL provider.

I have DSL and like it but my experience is that cable is much faster for downloading. I would have a hard time downgrading from super fast to fast.

Most new cable/dsl modems can use a USB cable. If you need an ethernet cable than you can buy an ethernet card for around $10. Installation is usually as hard as opening the computer.
