Internet and DCL App Question

A co-worker and I are scheduled to go on DCL he in October 2017 and me May 2018, we were just talking about DCL starting to phase out the portable phone (can't remember what they called), we both were wondering if to use the DCL App on the ship do you have to pay for internet? And is there any time that the DCL internet is free?

The internet is free for the DCL app only. On the first day, you can sign up for 50mb of internet for free for other uses. After that is gone, internet packages can be purchased.

Once on the ship, you put your phone in airplane mode. Then turn internet on and link to the DCL Guest network. It is free to use and it only loads info on the DCL app. The app is exceptionally useful, giving you events, hours of operation, menus, etc for your entire cruise. It is updated with any changes to itinerary. The DCL app also has a messaging function that people use in place of the wave phones. The messaging function can be quirky but is very useful. The app doesn't work off the ship, though.

Agree completely, with one clarification. The app DOES work on MOST of Castaway Cay. The exception, in my experience is that it doesn't work on the tram, so I THOUGHT I was going to be out of luck for the rest of the day, but once I got to the beach, I tried again, and it worked, and kept working the rest of the day, so we were able to use the App on Castaway Cay to stay in touch with the rest of our party. It was very helpful.

Didn't know that about CC. I knew the wave phones worked there, but I never take my phone off the ship. But the messaging app would be exceptionally handy on the island.
