I apologize if this has already been asked recently....does HHI offer high speed internet access like the WDW DVC resorts? Is it still $10/day?

Thanks!
PJ

Don't know about the DVC, but free wi-fi interent access is available at the Mellow Mushroom, located next to the Harris Teeter right outside the entrance to Sea Pines. It would be about a 10 minute drive from DVC.

I would try calling. A gentleman asked the front desk where the business area was...the front desk person looked puzzled so he explained he needed internet access. She gestured at a terminal in the lobby and said it was $5 for 30 minutes (he was carrying his laptop). I didn't see any dataports in the room although at least one of the phones had a port labeled "data". It is 75 cents for any phone call with (ridiculous) additional charges for long distance. Long distance is defined as "off-island".

I say get thee to the mellow mushroom.

The HH resort does not have broadband service, but there is a dataport on every phone to allow dialup connection.

I use a local provider at HH (Hargray) and the cost was $10 for the week. There is a charge for local calls (.75 for guests and .35 for DVC members), but the call length is then unlimited. Make certain that any dialup connection is a local call- basically, anything off the island is long distance and very costly.

Do you happen to have earthlink? If so, there is a HH access number you can use for dial-up that wouldn't be a toll call.

Thanks to all! I was hoping they had broadband, but it's good to know what to expect. Doc, do you have any more info on HarGray? We have an 800 number for dial-up if necessary and I assume we would only be charged the .35 connection fee if that for dialing toll free.

Hargray is the telephone company for the island. I just look under "Internet Service Providers" in the Yellow Pages once we get to the room and call them directly (.35 per call or use your cel phone). They have a special rate for vacationers and will set up your account in about 10 minutes.

Each dialup connection is .35 for members. There are a few national ISP's available - they do have local numbers for AOL if you want to load up a free trial version of that service - but then you have to deal with pop-ups and other intrusions for months afterwards.

As noted, there are also providers with 1-800 numbers, but for $10 the local service is pretty simple.

Enjoy!

You can also sign up for AOL -- you get a zillion hours free when you first sign up. Then you can use the local AOL dialup from your room. ;)

Thanks, but we refuse to deal with AOL....EVER.

Hargray sounds like the way we'll go but just so everyone knows, the cost has increased to $15 per week for vacationers according to their web site.

Thanks for the update on the Hargray charge. IMHO, $15 is still a bargain if you'll plan to be online much at all. I get local service in many locations where netzero isn't available and have usually paid $20 for a week.

Enjoy!

One more question...how is cell phone coverage on the island?

Thanks again!

Cell phone coverage has been upgraded in the past couple of years. Overall, pretty good. I'm on Sprint and there is one area of Sea Pines where I don't get a signal. My dh has ATT and has no problem. HTH

Thanks, a coworker today mentioned that Hilton Head is known as the island of no cell phone coverage so I began to worry.

We arrived safely too and haven't had any problems with cell phones but Hargray's 24/7 customer service number took us to voice mail.
