DH just bought a laptop. He has wireless internet access. He may know how to hook up at OKW but I would like to know how.

Do I have to pay a local company?? Any informtion will be appreciated.

Thanks

Wireless networking: Connecting two or more computers through little transmitters and recievers. This will connect a computer to an internal network....has nothing at all to do with the internet.

If a network has internet access, a wireless internet connection can get a laptop on the internet. Some StarBucks, public libraries, schools, hotels, etc, have this. A WiFi, 8021A, 8021B or 8021G wireless adapter in you computer will allow you to connect to most of these pretty easily.

OKW does not have anything remotely like this.

Wireless internet: I have one of these, he may also, its actually a Nextel cell phone on a PCMCIA card, I jam it in the side of my laptop and I can surf, albeit quite slowly. Anywhere that my Nextel signal is strong and they are equipped for 'packet streaming', I can surf. Its $55 a month.

Verizon, ATT and a couple others have similar services.

At OKW, I use dial up, all the phones have a 'data port', really just a dial tone, on the side of the phones. You need a local dial up number and an account and you can surf dial up....its way faster than my wireless internet.

Richyams, how does one get a local dial up number and an account? My DD is getting a laptop after working summer camp an saving her money and I know she'll be taking it along, next trip.

Thanks for the response Richyams. DH does have that service on NExtel but I was wondering if he will be charged long distance?

Also, I am interested in the reponse to yesdisneyfools quesiton!!

Thanks again.............

Your ISP provider will have a list of numbers. AOL, Prodigy, Earthlink, to name a few have that information on their respective websites. To get an account, you join. AOL, which I detest, is always giving away a bunch of free minutes.
You already have an ISP if you are online, call them and ask for numbers in the Orlando/Lake Buena Vista/Kissimmee area.

I just called my ISP, Bellsouth, and asked for their local number in WDW.

Some people, Doc, I believe, have an ISP without a local number in WDW. He uses Netzero, they are $10 per month and have numbers all over the place.

Like Gail said, the first step is a call to your ISP.

I have a seperate plan, even though I will never use it, it also has a different phone number. My regular Nextel phone is unlimited time, unlimited long distance, I use it alot, the $55 for the surfing is unlimited time for sure and I believe it is no long distance, not sure.

But dial up is WAY, WAY faster than a wireless modem. Its only a 19.4 connection, slightly better than 1/3 the speed of dial up....even though the advertising says "Compression technology to surf at 56k speeds!!", its not even close....there is a chance that some geographical areas have equipment that actually utilizes that and my area is just not that sophisticated....I don't know.

Believe it or not, Rich, when we had dial up we were not much faster than your 19.4 connection. The best we could do here, in the woods, was 24600. It was pathetic!!!!

Thanks Rich & Gail, we have Bellsouth also, so I'll do that. What is the local WDW charge of the connection?
