Sounds coincidental to me. The plug-in fresherners are very popular, so undoubtedly some will be found in homes that have electrical fires. You could probably find the same results with night lights that DON'T have any air fresheners. It appears that there MAY have been a problem with them a decade ago, but they have been redesigned.
I don't think I'll lose any sleep worrying about mine.
