Interesting "Frozen" article

I think trying to psycho-analyze children's movies is a fools errand myself.

I know! It's like some people just can't

Personally I kind of like looking into children's stories and wondering about them. Some things of the article seem a bit off. I never thought that Elsa's parents were abusive but really didn't know how to handle their daughter's powers.

i thought the abuse was reaching as well. The way I interpreted it, the parents obviously loved both of their daughters and there is no sense that they have any issue with Elsa's powers until AFTER she accidentally hurts Ana. And it's only after the troll states that being unable to control her powers will be incredibly dangerous FOR HER as well as others that they appear truly frightened.

What I saw was two parents who were desperately trying to do what was right for their daughter out of fear for her well being. Were the misguided? Yes. But it wasn't like there was anybody around who could really help them. The only person who even knew about magic pretty much told them she was a ticking time bomb.

In the #5 point of that quoted article, isn't the family in the sauna a husband, wife, and three kids?

The one person next to the large man has a towel on like a woman would wear. It seems in the world of Frozen that the men are quite large compared to the petite ladies.

I think you are right. Three of them have the towels higher up, like females would wear. Two have them around their waists.

I LOVED the message in this movie. I loved that the act of true love was for her sister and not a prince's kiss. I didn't see the parents as abusive but as protective. But I guess I could see how it would be perceived. The whole gay thing I think is a stretch. I didn't even really remember that scene until I read that article. And the family was on the screen for a second and a half. I think if Disney was going to make a statement it would be more obvious.
ETA: I just google "Frozen's Sauna family" and the picture came up of them waving. The character on the right is clearly supposed to be a woman. She has a towel wrapped around her bust.

Kindof off topic on the article, more on the movie, but...My issue w/the parents was...why did they have to get killed off?? This is one of the most annoying things I find in almost every Disney movie that one or both of the parents have to die in the movies. Can't they just have a loving happy family sometime?

That would kind of make for a boring movie wouldn't it? If everyone is happy, there's no conflict.

There could still be a conflict w/out having to kill off the parents in every movie... conflict doesn't have to be death and sadness...

I saw and loved Frozen.

I read the article in the OP and thought it was really reaching and stretching to make it's points.

To me the movie seemed to be set in non modern times and the parents reaction to her "gift" probably would have been the reaction of those times.

A lot of Disney stories are based on Grimm's fairy tales. Talk about morbid and dark plots. These tales were not originally for kids, but Disney has taken the classic stories and turned them into something for the whole family.

Frozen is loosely based on Grimm's tale "The Snow Queen".
