Interesting DVC rumor from Rumors Board

I am confused about Disney not letting other Orlando timeshares trade into Disney. I have a friend that owns Orlando timeshares at Hyatt or Hilton (I always get the 2 mixed up) Vacation club and also Marriott and she has been able to trade twice into DVC. True, it was off season and she could only get OKW, but she was still able to trade into a DVC unit.

Hilton trades via RCI only so that's not it.
Marriott trades via II but they require you to trade the week you own, so if she owns her Marriott in Orlando, that's not it either.
Hyatt has a points-based program which trades via II so it would seem that she's using that one to trade into DVC. But I'm not aware of any Hyatt timeshare in Orlando. So you've got me confused too! ;)

I know one of her timeshares definitely has points so maybe it is Hyatt. Their membership is from the either the Keys or Louisana I think, because they go to both these places a lot. The Marriott timeshare I know is in Orlando.

As Lisa said, I'm sure they exchanged in with a non Orlando week or points. The reason they do this is to discourage people from buying locally then exchanging in consistenly therefore requiring them to buy to stay at DVC. Frankly, I've never seen the logic as one could just buy elsewhere but it's a common ploy in the industry with both II and RCI.

It really isn't surprising to me that they may be thinking of spinning off part of the cont. as a dvc - wether this ever moves from "thinking about" to "doing" is a big question though.

The shades of green resort (the former Disney Inn leased by the military) has been closed to be refurbished, with one of the Cont. wings being used to house the shades of green guests. At the same time, the Carribean Beach has been closed, allowing for the renovations to the restaurant there. At the same time, the Disney Institute was closed, and the plan went ahead to just go ahead and convert it to DVC. At the same time, the pop century opening was delayed because there wasn't a need. So, you had three resorts closed at the same time, and a fourth one not opened as scheduled. Also at the same time, several of the mansions were closed at dixie landings for rehab. All the while, there were deep discounts on stays at the remaining resorts. With that in mind, It isn't surprising to me that there are discussions about creative ways to feel those rooms. Which of those creative ideas that are discussed are actually moved on remains to be seen of course.

One comment I heard more then once about CBR closing entirely for rehab was that the new Gaylord Palms had hired away a large number of CM's. My opinion is that WDW based its decision to close CBR took into account several issues, not just bookings.

As for DVC resorts robbing WDW resorts I will agree to some extent, but as for me- prior to owning DVC I would come down once evey 3 years for 10 days and stay at a Moderate. Now I come down 7 times every two years for 8 days each. I think most members fall somewhere into that catagory so I don't think the long term affect of DVC expansion is something WDW should worry about.

I think the bottom line is that as long as the resorts keep selling out,Disney will build them,(if they don't,Marriott will).Maybe in 5 or 10 if the current DVC resort offering see's a slow down in sales, then DVC can rethink its strategy

I am sure Disney has a group that reviews the resort expansion/renovation plans. The Disney Institute conversion is the result of a modified business plan that decided a DVC resort will be more profitable than a DI renovation.
The Contemporary Resort is now old enough that they are looking at future renovation plans. It will surprise me if they put a DVC expansion and/or conversion at the Contemporary Resort.

I am against any expansion being done before Villas at AKL. That is the only resort that I think can match WL for theming, and I would buy instantly if they added DVC there.

Probably only a dream, though.

NO NO NO not the Contemporary !!!!! Tell me its not so. Too antiquated. How about an AKL DVC resort. Yeah...
