Interactive queues - line slowers?

I have always wondered about this: Do interactive queues actually SLOW down the ride lines? I know that they are supposed to be interesting, add to the theme of the ride and even take you mind off the line itself. But do they actually make the line worse, since people are playing with the line, taking pictures and in general just slowing down?

I was a CM at Great Movie Ride and also worked some hours at HM, and I remember how hard it was to get people to "pack up" in the lines. When they did pack up, the line seemed to move faster - we got people in the ride quicker and our capacity per hour was fantastic. But when they straggled out it was so horribly slow.

So - thoughts anyone? Are interactive queues actually WORSE for a ride?

The interactive elements occur before the FP line meets the regular line, so it's unlikely to affect riders per hour as by that point no one is interacting with anything. Filling in all available space is another issue that will likely never be sped up.

So true. How many attractions have that huge waiting area but people are still just lined up right in front of the door? And if you actually fill in the waiting space, the people in the line give you nasty looks of evil? It really doesn't matter since if you are in that waiting area, you will get into the next show.

I think a big "problem" with this type of thing is Disney doesn't come on with a full scale huge voice blast screaming "everyone in this area will get into the next show so please fill in all available waiting space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" But then again, that's why I go to Disney World. I don't want to be screamed at while on vacation. I'd rather get an evil stare from someone and then be content that person and I will be enjoying the same show in just a few minutes.

The only one I think could slow down loading is Dumbo, and that's only if the crowds are low enough and people are spending more than their allotted time in the play area.

The others stop being interactive close enough to the merge/load points that I don't think it's an issue.

When we want to view queue items we always let the line pass - most others I see doing the same thing. Occasionally we see the queue crazies that give others a dirty look if they even think someone is trying to edge around them (my dad was one of those). I think they're a great addition and hope more people adopt the unspoken rule of allowing others to pass if you want to take time to smell the flowers.

I'm always telling my kids to stand back a little, don't crowd people. And it drives me nuts when people crowd me in the line. It doesn't matter how packed together you are, the line moves as fast as they can load you into the cars.
