If your logic is to wait to get the insurance until the cancellation penalties are higher as opposed to not getting it at all, I can see your point. If you have to cancel the cruise between 30 days and 60 days, you would lose $100 per person, but you would not have spent the $900 on the insurance. That would be $600 more you would lose instead of the $900 for insurance, so it might be better to buy the insurance after all?
I'd like to point out that the cost for the insurance is the same if you buy it within 7 days of booking or within 7 days of sailing. I'm pretty sure all of the companies have a clause that says reimbursement for cancellation due to a serious illness of an immediate family member, but that family member must have been in stable condition when you got the policy. Also, if you buy it within 7 days of booking, they waive the clause about pre-existing conditions.
Also, Mcnuss is correct, $900 is 3 per cent of the $30,000.
I believe the cost of trip insurance is based on the dollar amount of the trip and not the destination. So insurance for a 7 day cruise in a Cat 3 would be more than the insurance for a 3 day cruise in a Cat 3. It would also be more for a Cat 3 than the same people in a Cat 11 on the same cruise, due again to the difference in the costs.
hope that helps
