I booked the FT package this morning and have been reading about w and w/o insurance quotes. Now I"ve seen that they automatically include insurance unless you say you don't want it?? My CM never once mentioned insurance in my call.

While I don't know anything about this particular package or its insurance, I can tell you this about travel insurance:

It's usually a sucker bet; that is, it's heavily stacked in favor of the insurer (Disney) and it's unlikely to pay you -- especially if you're young and healthy.

Some people are worried about the war or terrorism (myself included), but war and acts of God (i.e. a flood) are usually not covered by insurance. So don't buy insurance because of political concerns.

If you're going to buy travel insurance, look around for the best price -- another company will almost certainly beat Disney's rate. It's kind of like the car dealerships and interest rates: sure, they can finance your car right then and there, but you'll pay a higher rate than you would at the credit union.

Before you decide to buy or not to buy, you need to know more information:

What cancellation policy do you have without insurance? Chances are you can get most of your money back even if you cancel fairly close to the trip. This means that the insurance would only be useful if you had a catastrophe right before the trip (which probably isn't likely).

What does it pay if you use it? Most travel insurance doesn't return your money; it allows you to re-book for a later date (usually within a year or so), and it doesn't give you 100% of what you've paid.

My advice is find out more about this specific policy, weigh its benefits against your family's needs, then make your decision.

Thanks!! I'll call tomorrow to find out the details of what I purchased today.(without knowing it.)

I called today and the CM told me there was no insurance included in my package and that you have to ask for it to get it.

It's $39.95 per adult, kids are not charged.

As a travel agent, I normally recommend insurance for any vacation package, except WDW trips. The reason is that, if you book a package with WDW and get the "dream maker" package (formerly know as length of stay passes) or better, you get most of your money back if you have to cancel. Disney's refund policy is pretty generous.

I would only get the insurance if you or a family member (traveling with you or not) have a condition that you think may be an issue.

As airline tix are one of the most expensive parts of a trip for a family, you may want to insure just your airline tix with an outside company, and take your chances with the land package.

I strongly recommend insurance if you take a cruise, Disney or not, as you are traveling outside the US and most HMO's will not cover medical care if you get sick or injured on your trip. Without trip insurance, if you slip and break a leg, it could break the bank!

If anyone has any questions, post a reply and I'll get back to you!
