Insurance for a Disney Cruise?

Does anyone ever choose insurance for a Disney Cruise using points? Does this even make sense? When I was able to finally book my Dream cruise on points they went over the cancellation policy for the points. So I understand that I will lose points the closer I get to the cruise. But I am wondering if it is worth it to get private insurance or get the insurance that DVC offers for a cruise.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks!

I believe Travelguard - the company who sends a flyer with our reservations - is the only one who will insure DVC points. Problem is they only reimburse $5 per point. We tend to take a policy that covers air, baggage, delays and medical reimbursement. We take our chances on the points, most of the time.

I have a friend who has a wonderful photo of the Disney ship off in the distance because he had missed it after one of the port stops. He was in a panic since he had not purchased travel insurance and was desperately trying to figure out how to get back to the states. Because of him, I purchase insurance.

Actually, your DVC points would not be reimbursed via the Travelguard policy in this scenario. It is coverage for cancellation of the entire cruise, such as medical emergency, weather, etc.

Stick with Disney excursions, and the ship will be held for you if the group is late returning to the port. Awful to have to try and catch up with the ship..

Thanks CarolAnn, Do you then just do a private insurance for airfare, baggage and medical? Like on Insuremytrip.com or something, or do you stay with the Travelguard? And then maybe get some reimbursement for the points. I guess I don't mind taking a chance on the points, but I would be concerned with medical stuff and plane delays. Stuff like that.

Thanks

We just stopped in at our local AAA office last week and took insurance for our October 3 day cruise. We took the medical, trip interruption, baggage, etc at a cost of only $36 per person. I am always most concerned with the medical as this covers things such as helicopter evacuation on the cruise, etc. I will look it up later tonite at home and let you know the details.. We have also used Travelguard in the past and I had no problems with them either.

Thanks Carol! We are AAA members and I always forget them for things like this. If you get the chance to look it up that would be great!

Here is what our plan includes: Baggage coverage $500; Baggage Delay coverage $200; 24 hour hotline assistance; Missed connection coverage $1,000; Emergency Medical Transportation $100,000; Emergency Medical and Dental $50,000; Trip Cancellation protection $250; Travel/trip delay coverage $500; Trip Interuption Protection $250.

We took the minimum dollar amount on the trip coverage as we were primarily interested in the medical benefits. You can insure your trip for a higher dollar amount for sure.

But the big question is, have you ever submitted a claim? All insurance companies are great at taking your money. It's the payout that's a pain!
