DH normally takes our children to their gymnastics classes. I got a chance to attend yesterday and noticed that the gymnastics instructor included her daughter in the class, giving equal time.

Since we are paying for the class, I feel like she should teach her daughter on her own time. What do you think?

don't have a problem with it. Same thing at our gym too. I never notice special privledges or extra attention given to their son. A lesson is a lesson. If you are paying for a group lesson then that's what it is. If it was private and the instructor's child was there yes I would have a problem.
Our instuctors/owners live at this gym. No matter when I stop in for a make up or STP one is always there.

I agree, if it's a private lesson, I would have a problem. A group lesson, then no.

my dd has taken lessons at 2 different gyms and at both gyms the teachers kids were in my dds class. They were both group lessons so I don't have a problem with it at all.

I have no problem w/ it. It's just one of the "perks" used to attract good teachers.

At our vvveerryyy expensive d/care-preschool, several teachers have their own children included at no cost. Many of the teachers would have left to be SAHM's if this had not been available. Since teachers are paid so low, it's a nice "perk".

I have no problem with children getting exercise. What would the child be doing if not participating in the class? Teachers need some perks.

Does it make a difference if the instructor owns the gym? It is a one person shop so this isn't a perk to attract teachers.

That happens in any sport..

Our last year softball team, the coaches daughter was an okay player, but he made her out to be the"super star" (He told us that is why he coaches so she can be the super star", and she is an okay player, but not very motivated.. So as long as your daughter's instructor is fair-

I don't see why her daughter should be deprived of the benifit of participating in a class because the mom owns the school.

I don't have one problme at all (and as far as I know no one else does) with our instrustors wife attending Karate classes at our Do Jang. He has also made it clear that while the age for classes in our school starts at 6, His son will start next yr when he is 5 (the exception in out school is if an older sibbling in in the school then a 5 may start after an evaluation). The son will likely be in the class that my DS teaches. DS gets paid by the head, and I'm sure he will get paid for the son, but I dont' think either of us wouold mind if he didn't

The only time I can see it being a difference would be a private lesson. If you paid for a private lesson, then yes I would have a problem, but if its a group lesson, its just one more kid. Because of the instructors dd being in our class, my dds class has moved up levels quicker than the other classes.

Why is it that people assume whatever your job is that you want to do it 24/7/365?

I agree with everyone else.. if it is a group lesson and if she is not showing favortism to her dd...no problem.
My DD is on my soccer team and it's really hard sometimes. She will say things that other girls wouldn't dare, just showing off and I have to be so careful when assigning positions etc to not show favoritism.
It's really hard sometimes and not as wonderful as it looks.
Still wouldn't trade it for the world though :)

I actually taught gymnastics and a Mom and me class for about four years. The perk was that my kids would be included in the classes for FREE!

I took advantage of that perk. It was a great way to have my kids with me, and not having to pay a sitter. I gave all kids in my class the equal amount of instruction.

let her remove her own child from the class and add three other paying customers so she has enough money to pay for a sitter...or better yet, let her raise YOUR tuition to cover the cost of a sitter...

as long as there's not favoritsim, why should you care?

I don't see what the problem is. If you're paying to be be part of a group class of 10 for example, what does it matter who the 10 kids are? As long as everyone is getting equal time.

My dd has been in dance and gymnastics for years and there has always been at least one of the instructors children in the classes. It never even occured to me to think of it as a problem. I pay the same amount whether there are 5 kids or 25.

Now if their child was getting an unfair amount of attention or if I was paying for private lessons then I would have a problem.

As powellrj said, sometimes you even get perks from having an instructors child in your class.

This is what I was going to say. This is how it works where I live. The first child is free and each additional child pays at a discount. As long as there is no special attention or treatment paid to the instructors kids I have no problem with it.

I don't post unless I'm willing to hear opinions different than my own. :) Thanks for the feedback.

I teach a class which two of my children are in. Speaking on the other side, I think my own kids get much less attention in class than others. I am much less likely to select my own to go to the front of the class. I am much more hesitant to give them larger roles or positions of honor. It probably isn't fair, but not in the way the origional post questioned.

When DD was in a Creative Movement Class the owners child, who was also the instructor, was in the class. I had no problem with this. She did not show favortism to her daughter.
