DH's cousin is making/getting other people to make 200 fleece blankets for an orphanage in India. She has visited this place, as has my dh, and it's hard to describe how stark it is. It is clean and the children seem to be well cared for, but they have essentially nothing. They sleep on straw pallets on the floor -- some have blankets, some don't. Each child has a tin cup and bowl, and their diet consists of very little other than rice.

DH's cousin talked to the nuns who run the orphanage and came up with the idea of making a blanket for every single child. The idea is for all 200 of them to be different. She's soliciting friends and families to help make the blankets/buy the materials.

So just how easy to make are these blankets? Also, assuming they are easy, are they easy enough for my 10-year-old DS to make? I think it would be more meaningful for my kids (and for me, too, for that matter) if we made blankets rather than sending $. I just don't want to offer to make them until I know exactly what I'm getting into!

Rajah has detailed instructions somewhere. It looked pretty simple to me.

I make them all the time and all I do is a blanket stitch around the outside of the blanket. You would probably want 1 yard of fleece per blanket. I don't know if you have a Hancock fabric close to you but they had tons of different fleece patterns.

My 13 yo DS has done this as a church project! He loved doing it, made about 4 of them & took them to a homeless shelter in a nearby town.

All we did was put 2 cut peices of fleece together, clip "fringes" on each side of both peices about 2 inches long, then knot them together.

Since then we have had a knitting group start up in our church & they also make these blankets for our Deacons & Ministers to deliver to homebound or ill parishoners when they visit. It's been a great project!

Soudns like a very worthy cause! Good luck!
