Inspired by vacation threads, what do you look for in a vacation spot?

I was particularly curious since I saw so many popular tourist places on the most hated vacation spots thread. What exactly do you want in a non-Disney vacation spot to have a good time?

I guess that I want either nice scenery and interesting historic sights. Good restaurants, shopping and maybe a themepark are bonuses. A beach is pleasant but not real important to me.

Thinking about places that disappointed you, what were they lacking? Or what did they have too much of?

Our likes: warm/hot weather (not cold, not too humid), safe, food should be tasty, entertainment should be plentiful, vacation should be relatively affordable. We have a toddler and preschooler -- any vacation needs to take them into account.

We enjoy WDW, but frankly find it to be quite exhausting.

In the spring, we'll be taking the kids on their first (our fourth) cruise. Our little girl will finally be old enough for the children's program, so I'll be able to get some breaks for a couple hours here and a couple hours there. I'm hoping the kids like cruising as much as Mom and Dad have in the past.

I think we would like to try an all-inclusive in the Caribbean someday also.

Warm weather, warm,clean water to swim in, clean beaches and great service on the beach. That's not what I want, that's what I need. That's for my relaxing vacation. For an adventurous vacation, almost anything will do. 15 degrees F and an outhouse...yeah, that's a vacation

my biggest issue is usualy around lodging. i want some place that is clean, comfortable and feels safe. i prefer to stay in a 2 room set up (like the embassy suites style) with a wet bar, fridge and microwave. this way i can bring leftovers back from meals and we can nosh on them in the room. the 2 rooms also have the added benefit of 2 tv's so either the kids can watch one while dh and i watch the other, or in the event of kid conflicts i can separate them into different tv zones.

i want the location to offer some kid friendly venues, some grownup interest stuff (it's give and take in our family-if we are going to troop all over an amusement park the kids can survive a scenic car drive), and restaurants that offer both good kid food and nicer grownup fare (i love places that will offer kid size portions off the adult menu too!).

as far as weather goes-no place that gets humidity with their heat (i like floriday in january ), and no place that i have to be worried about digging my rental car out of the snow.

So far I'm seeing warmth and beaches. Plus a chance to rest. I can see that WDW can't provide all of these things!
