Inspired by the draft thread....

In the thread about the draft, several people mention moving overseas to countries such as France and Australia. Have you ever moved overseas to a different country? If so, did you just abandon ship and start over there with only the clothes on your back? Surely, you could only bring a handful of your belongings. My curiosity has gotten the best of me right now.

My father's family moved from Hawaii to Alaska in the 1960s and they were able to bring their car and their belongings as they traveled by boat. Enough of my rambling already, have you done it? If so, how? I think it would be fun to live overseas for a short period of time.

I live in Italy and have for almost 3 years. We moved here due to the military, but now that hubby is retiring, we have decided to stay. Like with any move, if you want, you can take anything with you.....including your cars. It will cost you alot more and take many months for arrival, but you won't be with just the clothes on your back.

I've been across the boarder so often to Canada, the Toronto area that I could see myself living there if I had to and not get toooo homesick.

I can't imagine why I'd need to move to Canada though.

I lived in Germany when my ex was stationed there in the military. I loved it--in fact, I really didn't want to leave to come back to the States. We were newly married so we rented a furnished apartment in town--we were unable to get housing on post at that time. I loved living right in the middle of a German town. The people were wonderful to me. I'm hoping to go back for a visit eventually.

Dh moved to the U.S. from England when he was a young man. We've talked about possibly retiring to England when the time comes.

I've moved across country several times and to another country once--with no friends or family around. It really taught me how to take care of myself and make new friends and a support network.
