I'll set the scene- man is president of a national club and is getting remarried to an exotic dancer who works with a large snake (not that there is anything wrong with that ;) ).

Wedding invitation arrives- sepia toned photo of the two of them dressed as American Indians; he with tomahawk and head dress. Title of photo?

ME GETTUM NEW SQUAW! :earseek:

Inside is the usual information. Discuss... :bitelip:

Darn, I wish I had thought of it ;)

I bet it'll be an interesting wedding!

Wow.............okay...........hmm.............I guess I have no response to that.

I don't think it would pass as PC unless he ispart Indian.

Okay the invitation is tacky, but the snake part is just wrong. I hate snakes.

Squaw is considered a very offensive term to Native Americans as it refers to a part of the female body.

Whether this couple even knew that (and shoot - given the circumstances it might be appropriate) how TACKY!!

Well, I was invited to a wedding where the outside of the invitation was a pencil drawing of a pickup truck!

Wow, that is tacky, regardless of ethnic heritage!

I can't say that I've ever seen anything that bad before.

I don't want to start any controversy, nor do I want to condone the usage of the word, but........this is not entirely accurate.

Modern dictionaries define the word "squaw" as basically an American Indian woman or wife.

The word "squaw" was borrowed from the Algonquin language family of a few Indian tribes in Canada and New England and first appeared in the American vocabulary around 1634.1 It has been a familiar word in literature and historical documents for most of this country’s history. The Massechusett/Algonquin word means "young woman." The word is unknown in the languages of Native Americans of the southwestern United States.

The controversy over this term appears to have started in 1973 with the book Literature of the American Indian, by Thomas E. Sanders and Walter W. Peek. Sanders and Peek suggested that the word "squaw" may have been derived from a Mohawk word for female genitalia. In a 1992 appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Native American spokesperson Suzan Harjo mentioned their theory and started the controversy. The theory has been proven false by linguists but that hasn’t stopped the flood of political correctness activists from objecting to the name.

Since the word "squaw" has never been a part of the native vocabulary in the western three-quarters of the nation, the only way the Indians can form an opinion of the word is by observing how it is used in the English language and listening to the opinions of linguistic "authorities." I believe that there would be little objection to the word "squaw" among Indian peoples if they knew the true etymology of the word.

There is, in fact, a desire among many native Americans to preserve the usage of the word "squaw."

I wouldn't have done a wedding invitation like that...but I think it's kind of funny! :)
I think so too, sometimes tacky is funny!

Tarheel Tink,
You better plan to attend this one..................we'll never forgive you if you don't go and give us all the details! I can't wait to hear what the bride wore! :rotfl2:

i recall a thread within the past month or so wherein someone received (and at the last moment) an e-mail wedding invitation-now that is tacky

p.s. i just learned this morning that a family member is getting married this summer. likely a summer holiday weekend (nice for those who have to travel some distance) in a very high end tourist destination (given her family is from the area and i understand the tradition but very bad for those who will be unable to afford or even locate lodging).

Okay, I can't stop giggling about this invitation. Creatively tacky ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought it was funny. I'd assume they are not going for "elegant" and would hope that their guest list was small enough that they personally knew each guest if sending this kind of invitation. Not everyone wants an elegant wedding and I'm all for making your wedding what you want it to be.

let me preface this by saying i have received "marriage announcements" in the past, but they are generaly sent after the wedding...

several years ago i went to a highschool reunion and caught up with a girl i had gone to school with for about 6 years but was not particularly close with nor had kept in touch with. about a month after the reunion i got what looked like a wedding invite in the mail. nope-it was a "wedding announcement" that said something to the fact that 'such and such are getting married on x day"-no location, nothing...except a well placed mailing address (that even went so far as to be identified on the announcement as "mailing address"). i called a mutual friend who had attended the same reunion who related that she and several others had gotten the same in the mail-the bride to be used the addresses from the reunion booklet that had been passed out.

we all felt that this was a blatant invitation to send gifts nothing more.

TACKY, TACKY, TACKY!!!
