DD gets her senior pictures done this year even though she's a junior. She said she heard of studios that will airbrush or however they do it, take braces out of the photo.

Is this really possible? She says if they can't, she's not smiling with her mouth open. ;)

Of course they can. With Photoshop, they can do miracles.

Depending on how severe the appearance of the braces are, you might have her take a few non-smiling shots, just in case. Nothing is perfect.

Even if the image is not digital, they can do wonders by re-touching on the negative. It is not air-brushing, it is going into the negative and adding dyes that match the dyes that form the image.

Since braces are pretty bright reflectors, they show up on the negative as very dense and that makes the 'traditional' retouching (before digital) much more difficult. In fact, if that is the case it might be a good idea to 'paint' the braces black which results in a very thin layer of dye on the negative. That would make the retoucher's job easier.

But that last suggestion would make the proofs look pretty scary. So that would not be an option unless every print you had made was going to be retouched - that gets expensive.

In short - if they use digital images (most do these days) then there is no problem. If they are using negatives, you may have to pay more but it can be done.

btw - you have a pretty daughter - (no matter which of the three is yours)

Thanks so much. She will be relieved to hear this. :)

And I'm relieved too. Her full smile is much prettier than the closed mouth smile. :teeth:

I misunderstood the question!

I graduated in 1988. There was a girl two years ahead of me who had her braces PHYSICALLY taken off of her teeth for one day while she had her photo taken and then had the orthodontist put them back on!

Technology is amazing, isn't it? Your way is much better than mine! :rotfl:

I've heard of people doing that for weddings too. I'm way too cheap to go that route. The orthodontist would probably charge me and arm and a leg (which he already has) to really take them off and put them back on. ;)

I'm a yearbook advisor. Yes, the photographer CAN do this, and the quality is excellent but expensive.

They charge about $50 PER POSE. Suppose you chose the close-up formal picture to be "airbrushed". They'd load it into PhotoShop (or whatever program they use), and their artists would zoom in on her teeth and remove the braces from the digital image (if you're still living in the film world, that's like altering the negative). You could then order as many copies of that close-up forma picture as you like -- all with the braces removed.

If you ALSO wanted braces removed from the casual picture of her standing by the tree, that would cost another $50 because they'd have to do the same work to that digital image.

I've had lots of seniors move their appointment to a later date because they were getting braces off soon anyway, but I've never had anyone actually have the actual braces removed from their teeth for pictures.

My brother in law is a school photographer and had to do this all the time for senior pictures. He was quite good at it.

My ortho did this free of charge for my DD - he just took off the top few front braces and left the rest on - you can't see any braces at all.

I told my orthodontist I would remove them myself if he didn't take them off before I had my senior photos taken. He did after having me wear about 12 rubber bands in my mouth for 2 weeks or so before he removed them.

The wonders of Photoshop!

Some photographers aren't as expensive with the airbrushing costs....
of course our sr. picture photographer was soooo expensive to begin with, I guess he was embarassed to charge too much extra for airbrushing. :teeth: See! Look how good those teeth look!

When do her braces come off? Can't you just wait until they are off and take her to get her senior portraits done somewhere else at that point?

My youngest DD started work at Glamour Shots last week and she stayed the night at the manager's House (close friend of ours) last night to learn how to work on photo's. When she called me she was telling me she was learning to take braces out of pictures.
