To me, "the city" would refer to Cleveland -- it's where I live.

When you live around here, when people refer to the "city" they are referring to San Francisco.
(Even though Oakland is closer - ahhh...Oakland - "don't get no respect"!)

We just don't have any real BIG cities around us so here people talk about going into town.

This has been a funny thread to read.
I think we all take great pride in the areas we live in.
The term "the city" to me means the biggest city near you.
When I hear city I think of Chicago, NYC and the like.
The biggest city nearest to me is Knoxville When I lived in S. Jersey I would have thought Philly.

Well, even though I live in New York State, ‘the city‘ to me doesn’t automatically mean New York City. I guess, since I live and work in the City of Rochester, I’d be puzzled; but figure the person meant downtown Rochester. I haven’t been to downtown Rochester in about a year, and I’ve never been to New York City.

Around here, "the city" would be Atlantic City.

Well, since I live in "the City", it's Chicago for me! All my life. But, I know other cities exist. DH works for City of Park Ridge but, we just call it Park Ridge. Lots of villages, towns etc. around my part of 'the City' but, City is still Chicago!! Actually, for me when I think CITY, I think Downtown automatically, somewhere I don't often go!

When I here the term, "the city" I automatically think of Toronto (since I live in the city) or other Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Montreal, etc...

But New York is 'the ultimate city'...

I'm with others who have said that New York is not even on the radar screen. "The city" here is Chicago (and that is the term my family has used since I was a tot). At other times in my life, the city meant Des Moines (IA) and Worcester (MA).
