How soon into a relationship do you worry about dealing with the potential MIL/FIL? I am wondering because I have known my MIL since way before I started dating DH, and she was always the most pleasant person then, but she did a rapid turn around once we got married, and we are cordial, at best now.

Did you think about this when you started dating? The first month? After 6 months? Or does it really matter, because it can all change?

If it seems like it's going to be a long-term relationship, which all mine have been so far, I start thinking about that kind of stuff as soon as I realize that I think it's going to be long-term or as soon as we make some sort of commitment to each other (for instance, this past weekend DBF and I were talking about the fact that he has so little time because he works over 40 hours a week usually plus he's going to be going back to college starting in the summer plus he volunteers with his stepbrother's Boy Scout troop and the Rescue Squad but he said he'd really like to make a commitment to me....it's just that we don't know how much we'll see of each other until we're both out of school-we talk on the phone or in IM's just about every day and I told him I'd wait for him...If he is thinking about us still being a couple after he finishes school which is probably three years away then I'd say he's definitely thinking long term.)

Hmm...I don't really remember. I met DBF's sister when we'd been dating a few weeks at a basketball game (she and her DH had season tickets to our college games) so I think that made it a little easier, even though she didn't warm up to me very quickly...I remember feeling super self concious about every little thing-the ring I wear on my left ring finger, my shoes, was my shirt modest enough, etc. She definitely grilled me, but overall it wasn't that big of a deal. His sister was much worse...she actually threw a fit one of the first times I met her (in a restaurant, at her brother's college graduation) and ran out of the restaurant crying and screaming. I was so afraid of her. Since then though, she's really matured a lot, and we've become friends. I threw her baby shower, and I think being a mother has really changed her a lot. I enjoy being around all of his family now (except maybe his brothers, I don't quite know what to do with them) hehe I'm very lucky, overall...The hardest thing to adjust to is that the women in that family are control FREAKS. I'm laid back, and I do things simply, and that just doesn't work for them. Oh well, they're still great.
