A book you feel people must read in their lifetime.

I adored East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's a long read, but totally worth it. I also really enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas when I read it in high school.

I think that my favorite book is Seabiscuit. I started reading it thinking I might not like too much, but I couldn't put it down. I recommend it to everyone. I did get my Mom to try it, but she said it was awful. She is hard to pick books for though.

I received East of Eden as a gift from my Sister last year. It is not a book I would have ever chosen myself and I really stuggled to get through it. I put it down several times and forced myself to pick it up and read it. I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't read it again. LOL!

I am a great lover of the classics too. My all time favourite is The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Well, anything at all by him actually!

Agree on the Count of Monte Christo, great novel. I also love Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.

I love To Kill A Mockingbird. I still have the copy that was bought for me in the 8th grade -- its dog eared, but I still have it! I read it very other year or so, its like an old friend.

I also love Bridget Jones Diary. Not great literature, but sooooooooo funny!

my favorite book (besides the Bible, that is) is Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca. Great book, better movie (1940 Best Picture Oscar, the only one that Alfred Hitchcock ever won).

"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein. Covers everything from Art to Politics to Religion to man's inhumanity to man. Plus, the writing is about as good as anything I've seen from so-called "classic literature" and the story is considerably more interesting.

I'll also read pretty much anything Mark Twain ever wrote, particularly once you get away from the "Tom Sawyer" & "Huck Finn" stuff (something like "The Million Pound Bank Note", for example, which was the basis a LONG time later for the movie "Trading Places").

Also really liked JD Salinger's "Nine Stories".

I'm with snoopy on To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it the first time at 12 and I always read it once a year. I buy this book for people who have never had the pleasure of spending some time with Scout, Jem, and Atticus. I'm a little surprised that some people are intimidated by this book (probably because it's talked about so much and read in school) but it is a very easy story to read and it's so touching.

The thing I love about re-reading books is that the characters feel like old friends that I'm visiting. If you haven't read it--read it now!

Almost anything by Richard Bach - Johnathon Livingston Seagull, and especially Illusions: the Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. I don't always agree with his ideas but I enjoy thinking about them. I love books that make me think.

I've loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy since high school (decades ago). The movies were very different but nicely done. Also I really liked Lost Horizon by James Hilton.

I agree with To Kill a Mocking Bird. I read it in 11th grade and loved it. Definitely the best book I ever HAD to read.

I also loved Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks. The movie was bad but the writing in the book is beautiful.

Hard to say, but the fairly recent book I loved was Cold Mountain. I also really enjoy Tracy Kidder's writing, esp. "House" and "Home Town." They are nonfiction that read like novels.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the Harry Potter series. Not sure which was my favorite, probably POA. I haven't been so moved by a book series since.....forever! I also love that these are books my whole family enjoys.

Just a few...

For days I just want to page turn...The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

For days I want to get lost in historical fiction...Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Pillers of the Earth by Ken Follet (this one actually might be my all-time fav.), or Mary Queen of Scots by Margaret George

For days I want to remember the excitement I felt as a kid reading...Harry Potter

For days I want fantasy...The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

And, of course, agree with others about East of Eden and To Kill a Mockingbird- both great, stirring works of American lit.

As a child I really loved A Little Princess. That was a book that I read over and over. I loved the spirit of the book.

I like Military Fiction books...
Anything written by Stephen Coonts, Dale Brown, Eric L Harry, Richard Herman and some Tom Clancy will capture my attention.

My all time favorite book from each is:
Coonts.....The Red Horsemen
Brown.......Flight of the Old Dog
Harry.........Arc Light
Herman.....The Warbirds
Clancy.......Red Storm Rising.

Of all those books, Red Storm Rising is my favorite though. Have read it at least 15 times. It keeps getting better and better!!

Snoopy, I forgot about Bridget Jones's Diary. Thanks for mentioning it. I lent it to a friend a long time ago and never got it back. Of course, she is no longer much of a friend (not b/c of the book lol) so I really should go buy a new copy. I enjoy the movie just as much. Watching Colin Firth is very easy on the eyes

rcyannacci, you mentioned what is probably my favorite book: Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I love that book. I also love most of John Irving's books (Ciderhouse Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Son the the Circus, etc).
