I wanted to post some feedback on our experience so far with the under 12 year old covid testing with the updated protocols and offerings, which now include the NAAT IDNOW test at Walgreens.

Our sail date is Monday 10/11. We initially planned to only do the Inspire home tests and drop them off at the UPS store. However, when I ordered the Inspire tests on Safe Passage, after I paid a message appeared that said if there was a Sunday in our 3 day window that we should consider dropping off the test at the Inspire on site or using a 3rd party test provider with a rapid pcr.

We panicked a little because we had already ordered it and didn’t know that a Sunday being in our 3 day window would possibly change their ability to turnaround our test results.

We decided to also schedule a backup test and possibly consider dropping off the Inspire test at MCO instead of UPS (we’re in the Orlando area so it’s a drive but not impossible).

I was in a cruise group for some sailings ahead of ours and saw that people were frequently reporting delayed cvs results, so we decided to take advantage of the newly accepted Walgreens IDNOW test instead.

They only schedule tests two days in advance, and their booking window for appointments opens at midnight as an FYI. So on Tuesday night this week (well Wednesday morning at midnight technically) I logged into Walgreens and easily scheduled two IDNOW appointments for my kids for this morning (Friday).

This morning we arrived for the appointments, the kids self administered the tests in the car and we were driving away in less than five minutes. We drove directly to MCO where we planned to drop off our Inspire at home test kits. By the time we arrived at MCO, we had already received emails from Walgreens with negative test results (less than 40 minutes)🎉.

Since we had already paid for and administered the Inspire tests, we went ahead and dropped them off anyway.
For anyone who is curious about the on-site testing center at MCO, it was a breeze! We dropped off the test kit with no waiting and were told we would have results by tomorrow at the latest. At 10:20 am there was absolutely no one else in the test area (they open at 10).

We sail again in December and my plan is to not order the Inspire kits. I will stay awake til midnight two days before our 3 day window opens to book a Walgreens IDNOW test asap, and I will plan to go to the on-site Inspire test center at MCO if there’s any issues or we need a backup/re-do.

UPDATE:
Less than two hours after uploading our NAAT results from Walgreens to Safe Passage, we got the Clear to Arrive for both kids from Safe Passage.

In the same boat/will be doing the same thing as you. It was upsetting to get that message after I bought the test kits (I immediately called and cancelled mine). We will be doing the rapid Walgreens NAAT for my two girls (11 and 3) early Friday morning with a backup not-so-rapid PCR tests at my local clinic in the afternoon (as a backup in case Walgreens has an issue). I've already got 3 alarms set to stay up until midnight to secure our appointments with Walgreens.

The Walgreens IDNow tests are so easy to use with very fast results. My sons went to Hawaii in May, and Hawaii had super strict covid testing restrictions. After doing much research, I decided the Walgreens IDNow tests were what they would use. They also used a mail in test called Vault, which was suggested by the go Hawaii website and their airline. They took the mail in vault tests, and didn’t have the results back for 2 days. Took the IDNow tests and had results in 30 minutes. I was so happy to see these tests accepted by DCL. Game changer for at home testing.

Where did Disney say that the Walgreens IDNow tests are approved? I know they are not Antigen tests, but they also are not PCR.

See the IMPORTANT section of the Know Before You Go section of the DCL site. Sorry, it won't let me post the link. I am also unable to post an image - must be a newbie restriction.

The Walgreens IDNOW tests are NAAT tests - those are approved by DCL. Both NAAT and PCR test viral rna.

I see where it says NAAT test...I assume that the ID Now satisfices that? I have never heard of a NAAT test that wasn't PCR.

They changed the rules a week or so ago to accept NAAT tests. Guess people were having a really hard time finding PCR tests that got the results back within the small timeframe.

IDNow tests are NAAT tests. If you have one, your results will say NAAT test.

Assuming you can get the appointment, this is a game changer. Are there any other Rapid non-PCR NAAT tests out there besides Walgreens IDNow?

For national pharmacy chains? Not really. We have some independent labs near where we live that offer 15 minute NAAT tests - but they're $100-$200 each. Subsequently, IDNOW is not exclusive to Walgreens. IDNOW is a brand of testing machine made by Abbott - many places use them (including the independent labs I just mentioned).

We sail in two weeks and I was nervous because there were zero appts at either of our two Walgreens and we have no CVS. This is SUPER helpful thank you!!! (we are also doing the inspire as back up but I found a way to charge our insurance for it)

Check out urgent cares too. There are a couple of urgent care chains in my area that do the ID now and one of them has sites that are only for people doing travel tests with no symptoms, so very safe.

Just thought I'd let folks know, I stayed up to check on Walgreens as it opens for booking at two days ahead whereas my urgent care only opens for booking the day before. Decided to wait for the urgent care. Did not realize the hours of the covid testing might not be the same hours as the pharmacy. Our Walgreens is open 7am-11pm, but the Covid testing drive thru is only open 9:30-5pm, which would involve missing school (morning) or work (afternoon) so is less than ideal for us. Wish our testing day was a weekend as it does sound like the walgreens option is otherwise very convenient.

We used Walgreens ID NOW this past June for flight to Hawaii. Super easy, stay in car and self administer test, with results emailed before we even made it home! In MA the ID NOW isn't available so we had to drive to CT but well worth the 30 minutes.
