I have very strong opinions about wines and I tend to focus on a region until I either decide that it isn't one of my favorites, or I've learned enough and want to move on.

The thing that my DH and I would like to learn more about are ports.

Who has suggestions for some good ports? Cost is not necessarily an issue, as I know that good ports are not inexpensive. I'd love to know about the qualities of the wine you suggest, as many ports that we have tried are either robustly fruity or raison-y.

I'm looking forward to your responses.

i really am not an expert, but the few times i have tried port, they were this way as well. i thought they were just supposed to be that way.

You're right, Caity, but I guess what I mean is which one a particular recommendation might be. Tawny ports are usually on the more raison-y side while ruby ports can be very fruity or mildly fruity, etc.

I know nothing about ports, but I am an eager student. ::yes::

Barb, Hunt Country (NY State winery) makes a nice ruby port. It is not available in PA, although I have not checked at our "good" licquor store yet that can usually get things for its customers that is not usually stocked. The Hunt Country port is inexpensive, at about $15.00 per bottle. My sister and BIL picked up a bottle for my parents when they were touring the wineries last year.

Port is the one wine I can't stand! It's so heavy and tasted disgusting. Blech!

RUDisney,
Not sure which ones you've already tried and whether you prefer the Tawny to the Vintage.

My DH & I prefer the Tawny Port, and serve it instead of a dessert with blue cheese, crackers, dates, and walnuts.
We like Taylor's either 30 Year Old or 40 Year Old, selling for $100 to $140 respectively. Not inexpensive, but one bottle will last us a year. Warre's and Graham's are also very good.

Have fun tasting!
