Inland route CT to DC area in late March

I’ve done the inland route down 81 a couple of times - once to Charleston & once to visit family is southwestern VA, but both were in April. I know there’s always a chance of late-season storms, but on average is the ride pretty clear in late March? We’ll be driving down to Lorton, VA on Saturday 3/28 to get the auto train on 3/29, and, absent weather concerns, would prefer the inland route over 95s.
