So since ya'll know everything and someone's been there done that, what to do about an ingrown toenail?
See a Podiatrist? $$ Or try the over the counter things?
Any advice appreciated!!

(darn CUTE but too tight shoes, ugh )

My daughter had one (darn stiff marching band shoes) and we had to go to the podiatrist. We tried a few over at home remedies with no success. I'm sorry, those hurt!

Aww sorry your DD did too.

Can I ask what home remedies you tried?

We soaked her foot in epson salt and tried to get it out ourselves. Or dh did, I don't "do" feet! :rotfl: The podiatrist had it taken care of in under 5 minutes. I'll admit, it wasn't the most pleasant experience for her, but it did the trick.

Ok, thanks.

Did they numb the toe before he cut it out? I hope I Hope!!!

My sons toe got infected from ingrown toe nail. So be careful. The dr ended removing the whole toe nail.

In the future, try hot water soaks with Epsom salts. You may have to do it several days in a row, but it usually works.

Honestly I have a chronic one that my pedicurist removes when it needs it. Takes a couple of minutes of discomfort but that's it

When my DH had one he soaked it in warm epsom salt, then we used dental floss to go in between the nail & toe. Did that once a day & it worked. You do have to start as soon as you know about it & watch for infection of course.

I had one that kept getting ingrown and my podiatrist said the next time it happened he could kill that part of my nail bed to end it once and for all. I haven't had a problem since :)

But then I wouldn't have an excuse for my winter pedicures

But only if not infected, right?

Thanks for the replies all.

I'm thinking it might be infected since it really hurts and is red. But it could be red because I've been soaking it and trying to fix it, right?

So how do you know *if its infected?

And if infected, should I just stop and call the Podiatrist?

(Sure don't have time for this right now LOL :sad2: )

My brother recently had to have surgery on both big toe nails. Nothing else worked - a painful recovery, but is doing great now.

The podiatrist had to 'redirect' the nail as it came in from the 'bed' so it would now grow straight.

Good luck to you - over the counter meds/home remedies did not work for him.

Doctor to cut it out, then no more cute tight shoes or high heels! Also cut toe nails straight across and above nail bed sides or even at a center v if you choose to try and grow the nail out vs. removal.

Yep...go to the podiatrist! I had one that would come and go for a while. then it got infected and I could not get it to clear up. Hurt like the dickens too! Doctor numbed me up, cut it out, put me on antibiotics. It was instant relief.

 You mean the Podiatrist may want to remove the entire nail??
I DO have a choice in that I hope?? :sad1:

When I had mine done, the doctor did not remove the whole nail. She only removed along the side where the infection was located. It eventually grew back. If you have a chronic problem on one side they can treat the nail so the slim area they trim away along that side does not grow back. I didn't need that done.

Yes, they numb it first. That is the painful part, apparently toes are sensitive! My daughter had the procedure where they "kill" one area so it won't return. If it's red (or hot to the touch) definitely go to the podiatrist. You don't want to mess with an infection!

In my early twenties I had the sides if the nails of both big toes killed. It was the best thing ever. Prior to that I had recurrent infections and once my nail grew to the side of the nail bed and out the top of my toe. That really hurt!

I always get them. I've gone to the podiatrist in the past for it and for just a couple of seconds tending to it adds up to cost lots of dollars. Now, I go get a pedicure. Not only do my nails and feet look great, she's able to take care of the problem for a lot less.
