OK, DH and I are looking for a dog and I have taken a couple of "breed matching" quizzes and they always come up with a variety of Spaniels as our best match. So, I've looked up a little bit, but I am looking for more info.

We currently have a 10mo shephard/border collie mix. She is dominant and very smart. We are looking for a dog to compliment her personality. Well, right now there are 3 lab/Spaniel X pups at our Humane Society and so we are going to check them out in an hour or so.

The basic info I have found on spaniels is that they tend to be submissive (which would be good with our other dog) and are obedient--they rate about 3 or 4 on a scale of 1-5 depending on the breed.

We would like another fast learner, since Q was quick to pick up on commands and routines.

Anyway, any tips or info would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Jake is our border/spaniel/setter mix. Our other two are a very large female german shepherd and a female toy poodle.

In all honesty, Jake is our "best" baby. He is extremely intelligent, very very affectionate, and does whatever we tell him immediately. Our shepherd always has to decide if we really, really mean what we say or if she can go ahead and do her grounds/house interior checks first. Our poodle is a perfect lap-warmer and has no other function in life.

Jake "accidentally" had the run of the entire house one time. He spent all day gathering ALL of the dog toys (of which there are many) and playing/chewing with them. He did not get on the furniture, get into the trash can, or anything he's not normally allowed to do. He was in total heaven because he didn't have to share all those toys!

Very easygoing type, those spaniels!

Spaniels are wonderful family dogs. What you've read is true they are highly intelligent and get along well with other dogs. I'd go for a Springer or any spaniel maybe mixed with a larger dog. That way, being of somewhat equal size your current dog would have a great playmate. Also consider a lab mix or retriever mix. Both breeds are great family pets and of similar size.

Luvvy is a cocker spaniel, and she was generally good around other dogs in the beggining, but she is an only dog and has been all her life, so now that she's older she is a bit protective of us. But generally she is a very sweet furbaby.

Jazz is a Brittany, can be full of beans at times, but she's a great dogger. Loves other animals (dogs, cats).
She's very affectionate. When I get home from work she wants to curl up with me and get a tummy rub. She's not destructive. She has free run of most of the house all the time. We don't let her in our bedroom as she'd sleep there all day and get dog hair all over the pillows.
She listens great to me and pretty well with DW.
Anyhow, she is great and I want to get another Britt so she has company during the day.
