Info for Sea sickness meds

DH swears we shouldn't even say the word "seasick" in front of the kids because he's certain 90% of seasickness is all in your head. I disagree. I was shocked the one and only time I was seasick. ;)
Some people never suffer from motion sickness. Some people can't even ride in the back seat of car without reaching for a vomit bag.

In a way, it is in our heads -- because are our eyes, our inner ears, and our brains are in our heads. On a moving ship, our eyes see one thing; our inner ears feel something different; and other parts of the body are also sending signals to our brains.

Some people can deal with the motion and the lack of correlation between the senses, even when it goes on and on and on. Other people can't, and the result is a motion sickness.

But "in our heads" doesn't mean we're inventing something only because somebody else mentioned it to us. Some people are genuinely very sensitive to motion. Other people are much less sensitive. We're all different.

It is real, and it is so different for everyone.

I have never had a problem with this. I can read, eat, write, work on the computer in cars, airplanes, on ships, etc. and I can ride just about any rides without problems.

My sister has always, and still does, throws up all the time, even riding in the middle seat of their minivan.

Of our two children, our daughter is just like my sister, while her brother was happily reading a book, sitting his our oceanview window seat during Tropical Storm Emily was rocking the Dream with 40 mph winds.

Sweetpee, I hope your pharmacist told you that you would only need one patch each for your "little 3 day" cruise. You only need to change them every 72 hours.... :thumbsup2

How about ginger pills? I just bought a bottle from Wal-Mart and I'm hoping they work just well as Dramamine, but with less drowsiness. I used less- drowsy Dramamine for our four-night Carnival cruise a year ago and it felt it worked pretty well and didn't make me all that drowsy. But I'm hoping to keep it natural this go around so I'm hoping to just use ginger supplements. If it doesn't work as well as expected, I'm planning on asking for some ginger to suck on :)

Check with your doctor first before taking Ginger pills. They can react with certain medications and medical conditions with fatal results
For those of you on blood pressure medicines with a similar warning about not eating grapefruit, same type situation. If your Doctor clears it, then no problem.

OMG I am getting motion sick just talking about this lol I get motion sick when I swing on a swing...I have been on a cruise b4 and did just fine but that was b4 baby #2 and after her I tell you I feel sick when I swing on a swing.....

Oh yes. I gotcha. He definitely thinks of seasickness being 90% "in your head" as in you convinced yourself it could happen and so it did. Of course, before I got pregnant the first time I thought morning sickness was 90% imagined, too. Then, naturally, I spent a lovely 6 months learning that lesson the hard way. :lmao: And just you watch. It'll be Mr. I-neeeever-get-seasick who goes down first with it. He needs to be biting his lip now.

They did. :goodvibes We asked how much it would be for just 1 box and they said it only took off $.70. Not sure how that happens but whatever. We have another cruise booked for next September so we'll have what's left for that trip. And if nothing else we can always keep them here for when company goes out on hubby's bass boat with him. :thumbsup2

I was reading up on the ginger pills. If you take other meds make sure to clear that with your doctor and/or pharmacist just to be sure. I'm going to get some myself (DH cannot take it, tho, because he's on blood pressure meds). Ginger is not-so-much the fix for motion sickness, it settles the stomach when you're nauseated. So by taking some ginger before you get sick the idea is that you're avoiding the sick feeling moreso than treating it. Makes sense to me. My grandmother used to give us ginger ale when we had been sick so it would settle our tummies. Smart ladies, those grandmothers are! :cutie: After reading that I'm thinking ginger might be a good thing to keep on-hand at home in the medicine cabinet.

Hi everyone! Just joining the conversation. Someone mentioned acupuncture, what about those pressure point bracelets you wear on your wrists? Anyone had experience with those? Better or worse than the other methods mentioned?
