Thought I'd share...
Earlier this month, I used SWA RR coupons to book 4 legs of DD, DH and my trip to MCO. DH and DD were flying on my Standard award to MCO. I was flying on DH (Don't ask - it was just the way I booked it) I made the reservations about 10 weeks in advance. About 3 weeks before, DD decides she MUSt attend a school banquet and wants to fly down Friday AM instead of Thursday night. I try to change the tickets, but you can no longer use the standard award to book those flights. As luck would have it, I had managed to accrue and another RR standard award, and was told that I could use the 2 coupons from flights DD and DH were booked on and my new standard award and get a freedom award, that I could then use to get seats for Friday. I decided to wait, primarily because my mother was ill and there was a possibility that I might not be able to go, which might change who would fly down when. It was a pleasant surprise, when about 7 days before departure, they actually opened up seats to use the standard award on Friday morning.
SO, if you're flying on award tickets and need or want to make changes, if you can wait till the last minute, (or the last 7 days) you may be able to make the changes that you couldn't make two or three weeks in advance.
Also, it was interesting to find out that you can only convert to a round trip freedom award - even if you choose to use the coupons as two OW tickets.
In other words, you can't take standard award ticket (which is two coupons) and convert it one freedom award coupon. You have to have two standard awards (4 coupons) to convert to a freedom award. (did I explain this so anyone can understand? does anyone care?
Anyway, if you don[t fly SWA and don't accrue Rapid Reward tickets, please
disregard this post.
