A restaurant in our neighborhood celebrated 35 years of being in business and rolled back their prices today only back to 1975.

Both my wife and I had the same thing. New york strip steak, soup, salad, dessert and coffee for a total of .....$19.00.

Today's price .......$51.00.

Can't remember all the prices but beef stew was under $3.00 and you could get a three scoup banana split for $1.95.

Coffee was 25 cents a cup. Today they charge $2.05.

Soup was 40 cents. today it is over $3.00.

And to think back in the early '50s my dad made $10,000 a year and that was very good wages then. You could go to the circus with 4 people and spend only $20.00 for everything.

How neat is that? I remember those prices. 1975 is the year I graduated from high school. Go ahead do the math. :rotfl2: Ah, good times. :thumbsup2

My Dad used to take us to McDonalds. Hamburgers were 15 cents. Cheeseburgers, 18 cents. Fries 12 cents. Soda 10 cents. Milk shakes were the most expensive at 35 cents.

That is pretty neat! Hopefully they made a mint with that special today! :thumbsup2 I think it is great when places give back like that!

I remeber $0.20 hamburgers and $0.30 cheeseburgers from McDonalds!

I remember Mickey Mouse ears at WDW for $2.25!

I'm the youngest of 8 kids. My dad remembered taking the whole family (before I was born) in the '70s to McD's and getting change back from a $10 bill. Cheeseburgers, fries, and shakes all around. Now DH and I rarely spend under $10 at any fast food place!

We had a restaurant do the same roll back over the summer. It was great! $19.00 I bet that was the BEST tasting meal!

I remember when I was in 6th grade a brand new burger king (first one around) opened and I was able to get a soda, fries, and burger for $1.00. On fridays the kids 'went home' for lunch - we walked to BK!

And the kicker is that back in '75, people ate there and were complaining that back in the '40s you could have a lunch like that for under $10! :)

Just be glad it's not as bad as Zimbabwe where they had to make $100,000,000,000 bills.

In 1963 I bought my first new car for $3,200.00. I was 21 and it was a chevy and I was making $115.00 per week gross. If I now make $3,000.00 per week and pay $30,000.00 for a family van was I better off in 1963 or now.

1975 - the year DH and I both graduated from high school and got married!!

We paid $100/month to rent our 4-bedroom farmhouse out in the country.

We lived on $800/month, and $400/month went to the bank for a farm loan.

We bought a 1976 four-wheel-drive Chevy pickup truck for just over $4,000.

Ah, the good ol' days... :)

You bet. Their quality is top notch. Steaks and bbq ribs that melt in your mouth, liver that you can cut with your fork etc.

If anyone ever gets to Downers Grove Illinois go to Omega restaurant.

They bake all their rolls and bakery goods on site.
Attached to the roll basket is a little sign inviting you to take them home with you and will give you a bag.

Lived here for over 30 years. Never was impressed with Omega. Overpriced for the amount of food you receive IMO. Not worth the roll basket. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, just not worth the money. Another restaurant which is never busy cause I bet they aren't well known, but had good food, same price but more for your money is Sandpiper. On Janes and 75th. :thumbsup2 again Stephen's Restaurant used to be great, but not so much any more.

I'm a good eater and I have to take home leftovers. If a restaurant can stay open 24 hours and has a waiting line they must be doing something right.

Sandpipers was a good reastaurant when they were in Chicago. Of course things may have changed, it has been a good number of years since I've been there.

I guess it is a matter of taste.

Have to agree with Stephen's. When we would eat there my wife would get gallblader attacks. I had to take her to ER once and that is when she discovered she had the beginnings of gallstones. The strange thing is that restaurant was the only one she had the problems. This was several years ago and she hasn't had another attack. Eating out or at home. Needless to say we don't eat there before.

Have you tried Bohemian Cyrstal?

I was thinking about Burger King. I was on the $1 meal plan too!

Forgot about Bohemian Crystral. Excellent food. Decent prices, but very unfriendly managers. Waitresses act indifferent too like they are bored, but my guess is their attitude comes from management. IMO I overlook the staff there because the food is so awesome.

Funny, I also got sick from eating at Stephen's. If we do go there I have to be very very careful what I order, so of course it is very rare for us to go there.

Again as far as Omega, yes good food, but maybe it depends on what you order as to how much you get. My DH usually orders chicken parmigiana and has more than enough. I admit their salads are always very fresh and very good. But like you said, it depends on your taste.

Oh another very good place to eat we just discovered, Cabana Charlies, and Tilted kilt. Both some what reasonable, but pretty good food both in Woodridge in case you never heard of them. DH is a driver for a major liquor distributor so he insists on checking out different places that he delivers too. And then we wonder why we are overweight. :rotfl2:

This was at Omega? How could I have not known about this?? :confused3 :)

That would have been a fun dinner to go to, the day after we got back from WDW.

I have to admit - I love all the Greek places Chicago has. Grandma Sally's, Downers Delight...all of them. It's something we all missed when we lived in Florida for a year.

I equate cheap to fun.

Was the roll back prices at Omega - or was I reading wrong?

ANother good one is that Emmy's (or Emma's?) across from Suburbanite. Super good.
