Inexpensive day trips in NY (not NYC)?

Today is DH and my 6th anniversary. We have DD2 home with us, older DDs spend weekend with their dad. We talked about doing an overnight trip, but I'd rather save $ for WDW in Oct. Any fun day stuff to do on LI, NY?

Visit the wineries out east. Take a drive out to Montauk. Take a ferry over to Fire Island. Go to Robert Moses or Jones Beach. Go to an arboretum. Go to the aquarium in Riverhead. Visit the Vanderbuilt Planetarium. Stroll around Port Jefferson and have dinner at one of the restaurants.

NY has sooooo much to do there! Got to Times Square and hop on the 1/2 Ticket line and go see a show! Lines are usually bad for the afternoon shows but stop there about an hour and a half before the night shows ... Nice paying $35-$40 for a ticket rather than $100+

Also can go to Battery Park (way down in Lower Manhatten) ... you can take the Staten Island Ferry (free ride) across and then back.... you go right by the Statue of Liberty

Take a walk on the boardwalk? Drive into Brooklyn and see the art museum? Go to the Nassau County Musuem of Art- its a Wonderful little art museum and there is the Ridder Miniature Doll House Museum right next door. I dont know what you are looking to do, where you are on Long Island (big difference between East Islip and Great Neck) and how patient your 2 year old is

I second the Nassau County Museum of Art. Another fun Museum Is The Carriage Museum In Stonybrook.

On Long Island

Cold Harbor Fish Hatchery.. Tiny but the kids like fishing and feeding the fish..
Adventureland in Farmingdale. (Amusiment park, Small but cute)
Splish Splash Water Park.. In Riverhead.
Wildlife Game Farm in Manorville (petting zoo)

I miss Long Island. I grew up in Quogue...fond memories.

I second the drive out to Montauk, or Orient Point.
