inexpensive bed?

I need some inexpensive bed ideas.

I have a great futon mattress with a foam topper that currently is on the floor. However, my 90-year-old mom will be visiting Memorial Day weekend and she won't be able to get up off the floor.

I have the frame/slats from when the futon was a couch, but the legs/arms are no longer available.

Any ideas how I can elevate this inexpensively? I don't care about a headboard...just looking to make it into a platform bed. My carpentry skills are nonexistent.futon frame adjusted.jpg

p.s. the futon is my bed...there is no other bed. :)

If it's just for the weekend, I'd swap with her and let her have my bed and sleep on the futon on the floor myself.

If that's not possible for some reason, you could use concrete cinder blocks and a piece of plywood.

Give your mother your bed, and you sleep on that awful thing.

lol, that is the awful frame in the basement.

The futon mattress with the foam topper IS what we sleep on. I tossed the spring mattress and boxspring when I first tried the futon, it is SO comfortable! The only problem is that it is on the floor.

So I am already giving mom my bed for her visit (of course!) but I need my bed higher. I'll be using a sleeping bag in the living room. :flower:

College furniture know how...

Get 2 sheets of flat 3/4 plywood, 9 to 12 cinder blocks. Walla, you have a platform.

PS, your mother sleeps in your bed.

Are you sure the futon mattress and foam topper will still be comfortable once you put them on the slatted frame? I would think you would be able to feel all the slats - not like when its on the flat floor. Do you have any other options? Does anyone you know have a twin bed and frame you could borrow for the weekend?

Yes, the futon is from the frame originally...the arms were broken during a move so we stopped using the frame part.

Looks like I will be furniture shopping.

I bought a slatted bed frame (I guess it's actually a "base" and not a frame), complete with legs, from Walmart's website for about $50 last year when I moved and had to ditch all my old furniture because of bedbugs. I had a futon on it for months before I bought an actual mattress.

Please don't get furniture from Craigslist. That's how my old idiot roommates brought home bedbugs to begin with.

That's a great idea. And I agree about Craigslist furniture.

I would search Craigslist for a box spring and buy an inexpensive mattress. Definitely not an inflatable mattress! I don't think a futon mattress is going to be comfortable for an elderly person.
