So I know for ROTR and WS the boarding groups open right at 7 and 12 and go super fast. But I’m a bit confused how it works for Indy. Is there a set time they open up or do they just open up when standby closes? And can you get an Indy BG even if you’re starting in DCA? TIA

Indy BGs open when the stand by line gets too long. So it is not a set time. Seemed to be between 9:30 and 10 on our park days last week. But they do not go anywhere near as fast as ROTR or WS BGs. I had no problem getting a BG for Indy last week. You just have to keep checking the app. On Sunday DW decided to sleep in amd meet us at the park later. I was able to get a BG for DD and myself pretty early that were called less than an hour later (got the BG around 9:30 I think it was) and then a couple hours later after DW had entered the park I was still able to get her a BG that got called in the late afternoon.

The good thing about the BG for Indy is that the line is very quick once your BG got called. I dont think we waited more than 20 minutes (if that) on any of the days when we used a BG to ride indy.

OP, I'm glad you asked this question!

So is it smarter NOT to do the standby line for Indy around opening and to wait for BG availability instead, concentrating the early morning time on other rides without BG capability? And is the limitation that you can only hold one Indy boarding group at a time? (I like my Indy repeat rides.)

Kind of depends. We really love that ride so if we can get on it more than once we will definitely do so. So two of our three days in DL park we tried to hit it first thing in the morning. It broke down on day one before we got to ride so we had no choice but to do the BG later on. The 2nd time we tried it wasnt open yet in the morning, so we again got a BG when they were availble. We then lucked out that evening (Sunday) that when they re-opened the stand by line the wait time was a posted 30 min but it was closer to 15-20 min so we rode it 3 times in the last 2 1/2 hours. Not sure you can count on that happening often but it is something to look for the last couple hours the park is open.

Awesome, thank you! We have 3 PH days and two of them are DL first, so hopefully we'll get a few rides in. :)

You can only get one per day according to the DL app. I’m planning on doing it first and last as well as getting a BG because it’s one of my favorites. But after I get on in the morning I’ll probably rush over to Space

Ugh, one per day is pretty annoying! Space was my priority for opening, too. Your idea to do both sounds smart.

We got a BG for WS at 7:00, a BG for ROTR at noon, and by the time we got called for ROTR, all the Indy BGs were gone for the day. This was around 1:45 PM.

Well, I will say this sounds like it is workign better than the VQ at WDW. That's only one ride and the demand is so ridiculus that you can barely get in! We got our ROTR pass in the 7 AM batch and didn't ride until after 3 PM!

Huh, when we were at WDW in January we started at HS 5 times and got called to ROTR within a couple hours 4 times. The other time we got called around 1 or 2 because we had to get a BG while on a bus and the data was bad. You just need to know to the second when to click on everything

We did it - on the second, two phones trying. We got BG 75. I am convinced it is not actually first-come first-served but more of a lottery as everyone probably clicks at the same time. I loved the ride, but we both agreed that the stress was not worth the trouble and swithed our second HS day to AK.

I practiced and practiced and practiced ahead of time and constantly got early groups. The latest we ever got was 71. You have to tap the millisecond it opens. It’s not a lottery, but it’s about fast fingers. I agree it’s stressful but it’s worth it!

How can you practice? At any rate, we were as fast as anyone could possible be. :confused3 If thousands of people click on the same millisecond then it has to prioritize them. There is no other choice.

I don't think anything is worth having to plan to the millisecond at any rate.

You can have an Indy BG at the same time as WS and ROTR. Indy BG is handled differently from the other two.
I believe you have to be in Disneyland in order to get in the VQ for Indy.
At least that is what happened to me but by the time I entered Disneyland at 1:05pm the BGs were done for Indy.
Heard the attraction will go back to Stand By near the end of the day.

In the days leading up to your trip if you have your tickets linked you can try to join and if you get to the screen that tells you you don’t have a reservation you know you would’ve been successful. It’s not just about tapping but knowing where exactly on the screen you’re going to have to tap in 2 seconds and tapping that spot over and over until the button shows up. IMO, anything is worth riding ROTR. But at the same time I hate the BG system with everything I am 🤣

Correct - and because we started in DCA, by the time we got into DLR at 1:10, we couldn’t get Indy anymore.

Yes thats probably true about needing to be in DL park.
And the Indy line did go back to stand by in the evenings. Sunday the line stayed at 30 min posted wait time but was shorter than that (closer to 20 min for us) so we rode it three times after dinner that evening. And we ate dinner around 6 pm.
