DH (in a fit of optimism!) arranged a BBQ for next Saturday, fortunately with the proviso "indoors if wet". Its got quite chilly and rainy here now, so even if it is dry I think we'll be inside. Trouble is I'm a bit devoid of inspiration what to serve.

I've done buffets around Christmas, and I know I'll be serving broccoli dip (a big favourite with the crowd coming!) with blackberry and apple crumble/ice cream for afters, and I was going to get in some quiches, sausage rolls and so on. I'm not going to cook burgers and sausages as I don't want to stand over them, so does anyone have any ideas for good, prepare-ahead warm/hot savoury dishes which kids will also eat? If I can make them the day before and freeze/chill even better, as DH is working in the morning :headache:. Added complication - godson does not eat pork (loves smoked salmon, which none of the other kids will eat :headache: ).

We can't get chilled croissant dough or pizza dough so most of my Pampered Chef standbys are out

TIA!:goodvibes

ETA i should have said the kids tend to wander off and eat in front of the playstation, so "pick-up" /casual type food is what I'm thinking ;-)

If it wouldn't make you panicky to think of kids with a tomato-based sauce eating inside your house :lmao: this is an excellent thing to serve for a group! :teeth:

Company Sausage & Meatballs
2 lb hamburger
½ c Parmesan cheese
¼ c bread crumbs
½ tsp garlic powder
dash pepper
1 c oatmeal
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
½ tsp oregano
30 Jimmy Dean links, skinless***
32 oz catsup
¼ c brown sugar
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp mustard
¾ c BBQ sauce
½ c cider vinegar
1½ tsp garlic powder
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
garlic, minced (opt)
onion, chopped (opt)

Combine hamburger, cheese, crumbs, garlic powder, pepper, oatmeal, eggs, salt & ½ tsp oregano to make meatballs. Use a melon baller to make meatballs. Microwave meatballs on HIGH ~ 20 at a time – cover with wax paper. Repeat with sausages ~10 at a time. Combine remaining ingredients & simmer with sausage & meatballs 6 hours. Serve with noodles, rice or good bread. Yield: 60+ meatballs & 30 sausages

[***NOTE: The sausages are just finger sausages that are on the thin side...not much larger around than the base of your thumb - definitely not the really large ones like a hot dog from an 8-pack.]

That sounds lovely:goodvibes don't know if godson will eat it if its had sausage cooked in it though even if I don't give him sausage. I'll put this on file for another occasion as I have a beige carpet in the living room :lmao: But it will be lovely for halloween.
