i know i have to clear immigration in the first point of entry into the US, how long of a stopover will i need to clear immigration?

We find two hours more than adequate to get through immigration, customs, recheck any luggage, go through security and get to the required gate. This applies to Atlanta, Newark, JFK. Miami, Cincinnati, Washington Dulles and Chicago.
If you have through tickets and you miss the connection the airline will get you on the next flight.
On the way back there are no formalities at the second airport and your luggage goes straight through to the UK so an hour connecting time is all we usually allow.

We accept anything above 90 mins. Actually took a 90 min one via Chicago on way to Vegas, did it in 60 mins and we landed a few mins early so sat about waiting for next flight quite a while.

Totally agree - it can be done in 90 minutes, but we prefer to have 2 hours at least just so that we don't feel rushed, especially if the flight has come in a little bit late you don't want to be running through the airport to reach your connection.

We had just over 3 hours in January and have the same again for our next trip, I noted that we took just under 2 hours to clear immigration and recheck our bags at Newark so we would have missed our connection had we gone for the 90 minutes stop over.

We had a choice of 90 minutes or 3 hours for our stop over at Newark in December so opted for the 3 hour one. We have 2 hours at Houston on our return leg :thumbsup2
