My son rode Dinosaur in WDW so I was just assuming he could now ride Indy and I'm sad to see the height restriction is 46" for Indy but only 40" for Dinosaur and it's basically the same ride. Can anyone explain the difference?? I was taking our youngest who is 43" tall in February for a surprise trip thinking he could ride Indy.

Different attraction, theme and experience.

It's a great attraction, so I would not mention it so he isn't dissapointed. I would try to sneak on yourself. Single rider line.

He knows about the ride but he was too small when we went in 2010. I've done both rides and since he could do the WDW ride and it's basically the same vehicle and track I thought he would be tall enough and was sad to see Indy is 46" tall and he's only 43" tall so it may be awhile before he can go on it.

Huh. That's really strange. I don't get why they would have different height restrictions, but I'm sure that there's some reason for it.

A. Different states have different safety regulations.

B. The Indy and Dinosaur rides are not the same in any way except the track layout. The vehicle movements are set up for the attraction they are in.

Oh no, 8x! I'm so sorry! I knew that was your reason, but I just didn't think about it!

Just in case it hasn't been 24 hours since you booked, I believe they do let you cancel without penalty. But only inside that time.

I figure it's mainly a state thing. FL is really relaxed on a lot of stuff that CA is stricter on. That ride, pool slide rules, heck, even down to carseat ages.... (except it's the opposite on Kali vs Grizzly, isn't it?)

Got it all backwards in my mind, didn't I? re: kali/grizzly. silly me.

For Kali it's lower than Grizzly 38" vs 42". But those under 42" have to use the extra restraint bar.

The vehicles used for these rides are motion simulators on a roaming base. The Indy vehicles are programmed to move around a lot more quickly and are jerkier. Dinosaur vehicles used to be programmed this way too, and the height limit for Dinosaur also used to be higher.

I think one, because the state laws are different, and twi because, I felt Indy was a much quicker, jerkier ride than Dino. It may be the same car and track, but I thought Indy was a rougher ride. My kids also liked the theming of Indy more than Dino. Have fun even without this ride. We really liked the Matterhorn, the Sub ride, and many of the rides not found in WDW. My kids really liked the longer and more drops of Grizzy too.

Grizzly has a much longer and steeper drop. Might be the reason.

Yes. But it was nice to have those extra pull down bars so our younger 2 could ride. I wonder if they added those to Grizzly if it'd drop the height requirement or not. Or if it'd be the same so they decided to leave them off? It was my 2 yr olds favorite ride in WDW.

This is correct. The track layouts are almost the same although there are subtle differences in the layout. However, the major difference is that Dinosaur is much more spread out (larger area/building), whereas Indy is more compact. Therefore a turn on Indy would feel quite sharp, whereas on Dinosaur it would be gentler. What would feel like going down a slight hill on Dinosaur would feel like a big dip on Indy.

Honestly, when my kids were finally tall enough to ride Indy, none of them liked it. It was a bit too intense and scary for them at first. However, now they love it. I love both Dinosaur and Indy, but Indy is my favorite out of the two.

Having rode both Dinosaur and Indy many times, I have to say that Indy is my favorite by far. It's theming/show is so much better than Dinosaur. I wish they'd put Indy in at DHS!

I have never understood this. It is the exact same track/vehicles! :confused3

As explained below, they are not the same track/vehicles. They are the same technology but are implemented differently.

The vehicles used for these rides are motion simulators on a roaming base. The Indy vehicles are programmed to move around a lot more quickly and are jerkier. Dinosaur vehicles used to be programmed this way too, and the height limit for Dinosaur also used to be higher.

The track is also different between the two, with Dinosaur being more or less a flat (little elevation changes) track while Indy has more up/down hill. Add to it different body/seat styles and the ability of a person to stay on board can be very different.

Ok, actually Dinosaur is the more jerky ride, it wasn't always this way. We had a fatality that was loosely related to the ride, a person who had a preexisting condition, but was unaware of it died shortly after riding. The state of California stepped in and mandated changes to the ride, among these were making the ride calmer and increasing the height limit. After a few more incident, they then went on to mandate that everyone has to be in the room with the safety video for one full loop of the safety video, prior to that those that needed special assistance went through the exit all the way up to the loading dock.

In Florida, until recently, major theme parks did not have to report to any agencies and to a certain degree they still don't. They can fine them, if they find they are negligent, but that is about it. So, for the same attractions, their height restrictions can be lower in Florida, because the state cannot mandate them, in California they can.

That being said, lately, if the rides are exactly the same (i.e. Soarin' over California), they have been keeping the same height restrictions. I would imagine this is being done with consistency.
