In Training: Marathon Weekend 2015 (Dopey Challenge)! **COMPLETE**

Have fun on your cruise!
Thank you! We did!! It was so awesome. :cloud9:
Nice training this week especially with having to change it up because of vacation.
Thanks! I planned it out a long time ago so it helped knowing that I had everything scheduled.
That is super annoying about them changing races after the registration! That would annoy the heck out of me.
I know! I hope they don't do this again next year. It didn't matter to me much this time because I'm committed to that 5K with little cousin, but still. :confused3
Good self control about returning one bag & not buying the Small World Dooney's ;)
Haha, thanks! I definitely have a bag problem...
Have a great time on your cruise, Shannon!
Thanks Steph!
Sorry I haven't commented lately - had my daughter on June 24th and life has been crazy!
Oh my gosh, how exciting! Congratulations!!!!!!!! :yay: Yeah, I can imagine that you have beens super busy!!
I can't wait to get back to running - only two more weeks until my doctor's appointment and hopefully he gives me the all clear!
Good luck! :)
Oh poo... I missed your send off!!! I hope you have been having an excellent time!
I'm back and we did! Can't wait for the next one! :goodvibes
I am crossing my fingers for you that your luck will repeat and no weight gain will occur.
I haven't worked up the nerve to brave the scale just yet...
Sounds like last week your training went pretty well. Good for you! I know that right before a vacay it is hard to concentrate on anything but the upcoming vacay!
I think I did a decent job with it...I'm happy with what I did that week. :) Yes, I definitely get "Disneyitis" right before trips - it's a real thing!!

Week 3 of Half Marathon Training
Monday, July 21, 2014 - Sunday, July 27, 2014

16.76 miles completed
52.31 miles completed in half marathon training so far
412.01 miles completed in 2014 so far

Monday, July 21: Run #1 (40-minute tempo run...3.56 miles completed)

Got up bright and early this morning to head to the gym on Deck 11. We got there at about 7:50 and I was surprised that it was somewhat busy! Luckily I was able to grab a treadmill and crank out my tempo run while Will hit some weight machines. Total I went 3.56 miles in 40 minutes.

This was my second time running on a treadmill on the Dream and I can't say I love it...mostly because I just don't like running forward while watching the water move perpendicular to the direction I'm running in. It messes with my head! Someday I'll have to try doing laps around Deck 4.

After the run we took showers and headed to Royal Palace for breakfast. One of my favorite perks of Disney cruises...unlimited POG juice!

IMG_3968.jpg

Today the ship was in port at Nassau and we just treated it as another at sea day.

IMG_3963.jpg

We had our meeting with the DCL Research Team, and one of the first things we did was sign a form stating we wouldn't repeat what we'd talked about in said meeting...so unfortunately I cannot really say anything about it. :sad2: But it was interesting. We also did the Midship Detective Agency (loved this!) and had Palo dinner reservations. Great day today!

Meeting Daisy in her finery before dinner:

Best dessert ever from Palo!

IMG_4035.jpg

After dinner we changed, met some more characters, say the show ("Villains Tonight!" - won't see that one again!) and went to Match Your Mate in Evolution. Great day!

Tuesday, July 22: Run #2 (3 miles planned...Castaway Cay 5K completed (3.01 miles))

**NOTE: This is my very truthful review of this race. If you want to run the Castaway Cay 5K, I certainly do not want to dissuade you from doing so just because (spoiler alert) I didn't like it. I think people should try it and figure out for themselves whether they like it or not, especially as long as the race is free. I posted this review elsewhere and someone that read it wasn't happy with what I had to say...so you have been warned. But I think just because I didn't like it doesn't mean I cannot be truthful about it.**

Anyway...

IMG_1967.PNG

I ran this race once in September and decided it was one and done for me. But it's free, I needed to get a 3-mile training run in, and Will was interested in doing it, so we signed up on embarkation day. The fact that we were supposed to do so was listed in the Day 1 and Day 2 Navigators, and I'd known about it ahead of time from reading up online.

We were supposed to meet at 8:15 - we'd put out a room service card the night before to have toast and a bagel delivered to the room that morning, so we ate those and were checked in at Evolution a little after 8. Lots of people kept coming in and not everyone had signed up beforehand. We were supposed to disembark by 8:30...I'm not sure exactly when we did disembark but it was closer to 9 and I was fuming. This was cutting into my Castaway Cay time! I think they just kept letting people sign up and that's what was delaying us. The CMs went over the course, talked about the water stop, etc. I felt like every minute we were sitting there it was just getting toastier and toastier outside.

IMG_1969.jpg

I had my Garmin on me, so I know for sure that we did not start running until 9:15. It's very informal - you walk to the start near Pelican Point and there's a box where you can leave stuff (as adults you need to take your ID - we never had to show ours to anyone - and everyone must have their KTTW card, of course). A CM will just say "ready, set, go!" to start the race. You do get a bib in Evolution, but there's no timing chip. There is one "official" water stop that you run by twice, along with a couple other water stands that are located on the bike path near the observation tower. The course is very flat - you run out into the bike path (which is a big, tree-enclosed circle that seems like it will never end) and then out onto the airstrip. The "official" water stop is at the beginning of the airstrip, so you run past it once, to the end of the airstrip and then turn around, passing the water stop a second time to get back into the bike path.

The airstrip portion:

**WARNING...Very truthful review below!!**

It. Was. Miserable. My poor husband - a non-runner - had been training for this race over the past few weeks and was feeling pretty good about it, but there was no training for that Castaway Cay weather. We have been having a very mild summer here in Ohio, and the heat and humidity were just too much. He was incredibly discouraged ("Why did you bring me to this god-forsaken island?!" - only half-kidding) and I think the race almost wrecked the both of us for the rest of the day. I think the fact that I do a good amount of my runs on a treadmill in a small, hot cardio room at work helped me fare a bit better. The CC5K took me about 10 minutes longer to do compared to that 5K I ran in May. The weather was just not racing weather - 86 degrees (with a "real feel" temperature of 99 degrees ), 79% humidity and sun. And the course is not that great, in my opinion. It's not scenic at all - the bike path is enclosed with trees and the airstrip is interesting, but really not much to look at. There are no characters out like there are at races in the parks.

Finally we both crossed the finish line, and the first words out of our mouths were ones we'd been repeating almost as soon as the race began: "Never Again." Seriously, I've run the WDW Marathon twice - once as part of the Goofy Challenge with a heat advisory - and the CC5K was way harder. Other runners were saying the same thing I was...even Florida residents were miserable. This race is no joke. And to top it all off, the course isn't even a full 5K - my watch indicated we'd gone 3.01 miles, not 3.1 miles. And despite really wanting to, we didn't cut corners. Arg!

IMG_1970.JPG

So yeah. Done with that one!

We bought some pins a CC5K t-shirts - we both figured we'd earned them! - and headed back to the ship for breakfast at Cabanas and cool showers. Then back on the island!

Had to give my buddy here a warm hug.
IMG_4083.jpg

We parked ourselves on chairs under a blue umbrella on Serenity Bay for the rest of the day. Heaven.

IMG_1978.JPG

Will ended up completely loving Castaway Cay, despite a rough start to the day!

IMG_4156.jpg

Once we were back on the ship, we took a second set of showers and got decked out for dinner at Remy. It was Pirate Night and we were clearly overdressed.

(Note: this is *the dress* I wore for my cousin's wedding last month!)
IMG_4176.jpg

Dinner was amazing!
IMG_4204.jpg

After dinner we watched fireworks out on Deck 12 and hung out in Pink, the champagne bar on the Dream (my favorite bar on the ship, I think!). Will headed back to the room and I got out the tripod to take some pictures...while getting harrassed by some obnoxious 12-year-olds ("Can I be in your picture?? She's serious! Take a picture of me!"). So annoying because I know it was just because I am a woman and was alone. If Will was there or if I was a guy there's no way they would have said a word (I told Will about it later and he was FURIOUS). Ugh!

I did get some shots I was happy with though. I need to edit them but this is one of my favorites so far:

Wednesday, July 23: Strength Training (ChaLEAN Extreme Burn 1)

Last full day on the Dream... But hey! We worked out all 3 mornings that we'd wanted to, so that's something!

After the gym, we took showers and had brunch at Palo. I think this was our favorite of the 3 upcharge meals we had on this trip. YUM!
IMG_4351.jpg

Later we stumbled on a character dance party in the atrium! Can you spot the characters??
IMG_4367.jpg

We also did drawing class in the D Lounge (drew Mickey and Donald)...
IMG_4415.jpg

...and Mixology in Skyline! My favorite drink was the Captain's Mai Tai:
IMG_4430.jpg

Chocolate martinis! These were surprisingly strong!
IMG_4434.jpg

Dinner tonight was in Animator's Palate. By far my favorite of the 3 main dining rooms. I just love it in there! And I need a set of these plates for my kitchen.
IMG_4457.jpg

After dinner we went up to watch the sunset...it was a little cloudy, unfortunately. But we enjoyed just hanging out.
IMG_4485.jpg

We went to trivia in 687 (and got SCHOOLED!) and then the See Ya Real Soon character meet in the atrium. I got this shot of Minnie and Mickey and died from the cuteness.
IMG_4566.jpg

And that was it! Our cruise was almost over. But the GREAT news is that Will loved it - said it was awesome and his favorite trip we have taken together, was sad it was ending and cannot wait for the next one! Mission accomplished!

Thursday, July 24: Rest Day (debarkation/travel)

IMG_1975.jpg

Boo. Let's not talk about it. But hey, the floors in our house look awesome.

Friday, July 25: Run #3 (4-mile out-and-back)
Weather: 63 degrees and sunny

This morning Will got up early to leave for another little trip - this time he and his dad are away for the weekend for the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. So since I was up anyway, I decided to get right back on the horse and head out for a run. It really wasn't bad at all! I took 1-minute walk breaks at the end of each mile...I did have a pretty desperate bathroom situation toward the end though, so that wasn't great. But overall, not a bad run!

Splits:
Mile 1: 10:04
Mile 2: 10:43
Mile 3: 10:14 --> "OH MY GOD I NEED A BATHROOM LIKE NOW"
Mile 4: 11:07 --> Bathroom stop...whew!

Total time for 4 miles: 42:10, 10:32/mile pace

Saturday, July 26: Run #4 (10K out-and-back)
Weather: 77 degrees and sunny

Super not as good as yesterday's run! Such a struggle. The weather just smacked me in the face. I did run 5 minutes/walk 1 minute intervals and it was hard. But it's done! Total time for 6.2 miles: 1:07:32, 10:53/mile pace.

Also, I braved the scale this morning and was up 2.4 pounds. Not too shocking. I started tracking my food again yesterday so hopefully it'll come off quickly!

Sunday, July 27: Rest Day

Ahhhh!

Continued in Next Post

Did you feel partaking in both Palo and Remy dinners along with a brunch? I'm planning to do Remy night 2 & maybe Palo the last night. Also considering a brunch but can't decide which! I need two sea days! We are worried it will be too much food. Were you able to enjoy it all and not feel over indulgent?

I don't get why people are annoyed that you didn't enjoy the Castaway 5K. I understand why you didn't. I'm actually debating if we are going to do it or not since we may be doing a 10K on disembarkation day in Clearwater, FL for POT for Star Wars.

Being up 2.4 pounds for having been on cruise isn't bad at all! I'm sure it will quickly come back down once you return to your normal life.

Nice training you did get done on the cruise! It looked like you had a lot of fun. Your thoughts about the treadmill are exactly what I'm worried about for our training runs & I have 3 of them to do!

Honestly, it did feel over-indulgent and I'm not sure we'd do the same again on a 4-night cruise. Maybe on a longer cruise.

We had the Palo dinner first, and that was really the only one that I felt uncomfortably stuffed after. I just ate way too much food at that one.

The Remy dinner, I thought, was a better amount of food...but the problem with this one, I think, was the day we had it. We were both hot and sunburned (forgot to re-apply sunblock) from Castaway Cay, so wearing such heavy clothes for that meal was pretty uncomfortable. Plus both of us felt like what we were wearing was a little tighter than we remembered it. ;) Will suffered way more than I did in his suit.

By the time we got to Palo brunch, I think we were both doing better with pacing ourselves with the food. Since they have the buffet portion you can try little things...for whatever reason that actually made it easier for me not to eat a ton. The entrees (the chicken parm and the pizza) were, in my opinion, great portion sizes - not too big, which was nice since we also had the buffet part.

Next year we have a 7-nighter booked. Originally I was thinking we'd have both brunch and dinner at Palo and Remy, but we're re-thinking that now. Remy dinner was amazing but we don't want to do it every trip, mostly because of the price (I was floored to see our room charges at the end of the trip! So glad we had a decent amount of onboard credits!) and the fact that we had to pack our super fancy clothes for it. So we'll save that for special occasions. We'll definitely do Palo for brunch and dinner next time...I'm going to need to re-think my dinner choices there, though! And I'd like to try Remy brunch, still. It's still pricey for brunch but at least the dress code is more relaxed (similar to what it is for Palo, I think).

Since this will be spread out over 7 nights hopefully it'll be more doable!

I know! :confused3 If people are allowed to post that they DID enjoy it, shouldn't I be able to say that I DID NOT? :rolleyes2

Have you done it before? If you're interested in it at all, I definitely think it's worth trying once. At least you get a little "medal" and it's free!
Being up 2.4 pounds for having been on cruise isn't bad at all! I'm sure it will quickly come back down once you return to your normal life.
I hope so! I've come to terms with it...we'll see how I handle the 7-nighters next year!

We did really have an amazing time. I think I'm addicted to DCL now...

I tried SUPER hard not to look at the water. Eventually I realized that the treadmills have a capability where you can actually watch live TV on the screen - you press the "TV" button on the touch screen and you can scroll through some channels. So I put that on and tried to focus on the TV and it did help.
Sounds like a great trip! Glad you guys had a good time and Will enjoyed it!
It was fabulous! Thanks Steph! :)

What a great cruise report. It looks like a fabulous time. You and Will look adorable together and so relaxed!

I don't blame you for not liking that CC5K. That sounds miserable and the course sounds dull as dirt. Combine that with massive heat and humidity and, no thanks! But, at least now you know.

The food all looks delicious too!!! Yum. So glad that Will enjoyed it and that there are more Disney cruises in your future. :cheer2:

Yay! You are back :cool1: Sounds like you had a great time.

CC 5k... I am sorry that it didn't go well. Not sure why your review would cause people to get cranky. Course... I am not sure people get so worked up to written things on the internet.

Sorry about the obnoxious 12 year olds. How rude!

I am so happy the Will liked the cruise!! It will mean more in your future, yes?

Congrats on barely gaining anything and for working out while on vacation! :thumbsup2

Thank you! :goodvibes It was VERY relaxing, just what we needed!

Yeah, I mean...you know how Disney races are in the parks. They're fun! Nothing about this one was fun. :confused3 This is why the Castaway Cay Challenge is so bizarre to me. Same price as a race in the parks but the course is nowhere near as good - like, running through trees vs. running through the World Showcase?! I think I read that for the CC Challenge they'll have characters out so maybe they will change the course too.
The food all looks delicious too!!! Yum. So glad that Will enjoyed it and that there are more Disney cruises in your future. :cheer2:
It was! Sooooo much food...I'm still adjusting to eating like a normal person and not like a person that is on a cruise and is constantly surrounded by food. I'm so glad he liked it. :)
Yay! You are back :cool1: Sounds like you had a great time.
 We did!!!
CC 5k... I am sorry that it didn't go well. Not sure why your review would cause people to get cranky. Course... I am not sure people get so worked up to written things on the internet.
Me too. :sad2: At least it was free though!

The person said something like "your review was honest but I hope it doesn't discourage other people from doing it." I thought that was a little much. :confused3
Sorry about the obnoxious 12 year olds. How rude!
I know! I wish I had just ignored them!!
I am so happy the Will liked the cruise!! It will mean more in your future, yes?
YES! :dance3: We have one booked for next year!!
Congrats on barely gaining anything and for working out while on vacation! :thumbsup2
Thanks! When I think about all of the food we ate and the drinks and whatnot, a couple of pounds really isn't that terrible. We planned to work out 3 times and I am VERY proud of us for actually sticking to it! That is the first time we've been successful at that while on vacation. :thumbsup2 It made me feel much less guilty about eating all of the food. :teeth:

Monday, July 28: Strength Training (ChaLEAN Extreme Burn 2) + Ab Burner

Back to reality...booooo. I was expecting insanity in my inbox this morning, but I actually only had 41 emails...4 of them needed my attention and of those 4 I was able to take care of 2 pretty quickly. Not bad!

Really, coming back to work hasn't been terrible. I was in bed at a decent time last night and slept well, and I've gotten back into my schedule pretty easily. I did forget my hairbrush for the gym this morning though...oops. The hardest part of being back at work for me has been leaving the dog at home. I spent all day Saturday and Sunday, and part of Friday, just hanging out and snuggling with him. It was lovely.

Wouldn't you be sad to leave this little face?

**Story of my stupidity ahead!!**

Yesterday was weird. Whenever Will is out of town and I am home alone, I start to get paranoid and double- and triple-check to make sure all of the doors and windows are locked. I think I watched way too many episodes of "Rescue 911" as a child. :confused3 Anyway, when the guys were over doing our floors, they locked the door that goes into the garage, which is something we never do. Since the garage opens into our family room - where our mattress currently is as the floors continue to fully cure, so that's where I've been sleeping for the past few days - in my newly paranoid state I thought it was a good idea to keep the door locked.

So yesterday I woke up, took the dog out and gave him breakfast. I'd started watching all of the Disney movies we own in alphabetical order (I didn't come up with this plan until Saturday so I'd only gotten through Beauty and the Beast and Finding Nemo by now), and I was really looking forward to popping in Frozen, The Incredibles, Lilo & Stitch, etc. after breakfast. :goodvibes Before making breakfast I decided to drop off some recycling in the garage. I went outside...shut the door...and went to go back in. When the door is locked, you can't tell from the inside - the knob turns as normal. And like I said, we normally don't lock that door, but in my paranoia the night before, I had...

...and I LOCKED MYSELF OUT.

It took me a bit to grasp the gravity of this situation. "No big deal, I'll just open the garage door." So I opened it...and realized that I was just outside now. I mean, duh...this is not going to help me get into the house. "Okay, maybe I forgot to lock the front door when I took Archie out." Nope, front door was locked. I tried all of the windows - which I knew were locked as I'd just double- and triple-checked them the night before - the other doors to the outside...nothing. I'd left my phone inside. Will was in New York. I was officially screwed. Meanwhile the dog is staring out the front window at me like, "WTH are you doing mom?! Get back in here!"

:headache:

So then I started having crazy thoughts - do I break a window? Can I break down the door? (Hahaha obviously not!) Maybe I can take a hammer and a crowbar to the knob? (I actually did get a few pounds in before deciding this was a dumb idea.) We're not super friendly with our neighbors (not that they aren't friendly, or we aren't friendly...we just live in a neighborhood with a lot of older people who aren't the most social) and while I was pretty sure we'd given Will's co-worker (who lives one town over) a spare key, my cell phone was in the house and I had no idea what co-worker's phone number was off the top of my head.

:headache:

I was starting to worry about the dog (who was still looking at me like I'd lost it)...he's pretty anxious and we don't normally leave him alone in the house when he's not in his crate, so I wasn't sure how he would handle this. Eventually I headed across the street to a neighbor's house and asked to use her phone. She actually didn't recognize me at first (weird since I see her a few times per week) and then went on to lecture me about how I should leave a key with someone in the neighborhood. Clearly not with you, lady, since you apparently don't know who I am!

I was pretty sure we'd given my mom a spare key recently and I have her phone number memorized...I was also pretty sure she was in church, and who knew if she'd pick up a call from a strange phone number. THANKFULLY she did pick up pretty quickly - not only did she have the key, but she was available to come and save me! :dance3: I'm SO glad - because I think I would have had to call a locksmith or something, and do they even work on Sundays?!

So I headed back across the street (I could see that Archie was asleep by now...so clearly he wasn't as anxious or worried as I'd expected ;)) and grabbed some gloves from the garage. My mom lives about 40 minutes away and I knew if I just sat there waiting, time would crawl. May as well do some yardwork. And as dumb as it sounds, I was so, so sad that this was cutting into my Disney movie-watching time. Wahhh!

Mom made it over quicker than I expected and I was back in the house! Woohoo! So lesson learned - never leave the house without a key. And that is the story of my Sunday morning stupidity.

And I also worked out this morning. So there's that.

Tuesday, July 29: Run #1 (4.5 miles on the treadmill)

This run wasn't bad. A little mentally challenging toward the end, but physically I felt fine. I'm trying to pay close attention to how I feel in my shoes because they have 406 miles on them, and my running store said I should get 350-500 miles out of each pair...so these are going to be retired soon. I think I should definitely be able to make it through this week, possibly next week with them, but I'm not sure they will make it to 500. Total time for this run was 47:58, 10:40ish/mile pace or something.

The good thing about this run was that I had a chance to think through some things that have been bothering me. Will came home from his weekend trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame last night, and this coming weekend he's going to another autograph show. I found myself getting irritable toward him even after I hadn't seen him all weekend. I wasn't sure why, but when I was running I thought about it and realized that - I'm ashamed to say - I'm a little jealous of him right now. :guilty: Vacation is over for me and it's my second day back at work, but he went on another trip and then has the autograph show, plus going to a couple of baseball games, and he doesn't go back to work for a few weeks. I should keep in mind that not only do I love him and want good things for him, but I have fun stuff coming up too (Wine & Dine in November, Marathon Weekend in January, plus other fun Disney things next year - a few of which I'll be away for while he'll be at work). So basically I was being a giant baby about it last night. We talked things out today and we're good now. :)

Speaking of Wine & Dine...check out these beauties. That kids medal is adorable!!

Wednesday, July 30: Run #2 (8x400 @ 5K pace planned...4.25 miles completed)

Today is my brother's birthday! The big 2-8. I gave him his gift back in June when he was up for my cousin'’s wedding, so if feels weird not to be sending him anything beyond a "Happy birthday!" text message now. I love giving gifts.

Speedwork today! I feel like the last few times I have done speedwork I have had intervals that were tough and intervals that were great, but today they were neither...all were sort of in the middle. I think my body is still working off the cruise sluggishness, so that doesn't help. Also, we started moving some of our stuff back upstairs last time. Rugs are the last thing that can go down (the floors take a week to fully cure) and we are putting one under our bed, so our bedroom is still empty. But we were able to get the bed back up into the guest room, along with the nightstands, so that room looks normal again. Man was that mattress heavy though! A lot harder moving it up than down. I was definitely feeling it today, so I'm sure that affected my run a bit.

Total time for the run was a little over 49 minutes. I did a 5-minute warm-up walk/job, then after each 0.25-mile speed interval I walked/jogged for 0.25 miles. That brought me to 4.13 miles, and then I walked a bit as a cooldown until I got to an even 4.25 miles. These speedwork workouts really add up in distance and time!

In other news, at the suggestion of Ann/annmarieda I created a Facebook account and (thanks to Ann's help) managed to join a SparkleSkirts group. I have a skirt I have barely worn (less than 5 times...really I think 2-3 times) and apparently the resale market for SparkleSkirts is HOT HOT HOT...especially since my skirt, the DoloTech, is a retired pattern. Who knew?!

Me in my DoloTech during the 2013 WDW Half Marathon...one of the few times I wore it:
IMG_0562.JPG

Anyway, I joined the group (again, thanks to Ann for messaging the moderator to let me in!) and then didn't do anything. I skimmed over how to sell a skirt, got overwhelmed, then we went on our cruise.

So, the skirt was still sitting in my closet when we returned. While texting with one of my buddies, she mentioned a second SparkleSkirts Facebook group she is in that does the sales like the first one...but this one also has an "In Search Of" file. This is a list of different types of skirts where people can post their names along with the size they are looking for. Sure enough, someone wanted a medium DoloTech! :hyper: All I had to do was send her a message, give her my PayPal info, and BAM! $60 into my PayPal account (I originally paid $65 + shipping)! The skirt is being mailed out today to someone that I'm sure will love and appreciate it way more than I did. For whatever reason I loved the skirt when I first got it, but then just stopped wearing it. Whatever! I’m sure I could have sold it for more, but by now I was just to the point where I wanted to get rid of it...and really, getting $60 for it is still pretty darn good!

Thursday, July 31: Strength Training (ChaLEAN Extreme Burn 3) + Ab Burner

There's no way around it...I just do not like the Burn 3 workout. A lot of the exercises are difficult for me, but not in that "I enjoy the challenge!"-type way...more like, "When will this end?!" As a result I don’t think I give my all during the workout...not Chalene's fault, obviously. I need to stop being a baby. But it doesn't matter now because I'm done with the Burn phase after today and it's on to Round 2 of the Push phase! That means heavier weights (reaching "failure" at 6-8 reps, as opposed to reaching "failure" at 10-12 reps in the Burn phase).

In other training news, I have a "goal race pace" run on my schedule for this week...earlier I said I wanted to try NOT running the day before my long runs, but I think it's important to do these goal race pace runs on the concrete rather than the treadmill...so that I learn to pace myself rather than having the treadmill do it for me. So I would have normally done my 3rd run of the week today, but I'm moving it to tomorrow. Hopefully Saturday's long run won’t suffer for it!

Yesterday when I got home from work (after stopping at the post office to mail out the DoloTech!), Will and I made the impulse decision to move our bed back up to our room. I'm so glad to be done moving mattresses, and even more glad to be sleeping in our bedroom again! Tonight I think we're going to tackle the dressers, and everything will finally be back where it should be. That will be nice.

**WW Update**

After skipping my "official" weigh-in last Thursday, I did take a peek at the scale on Saturday or Sunday (forget when) and saw that I was up 2.-something pounds after the cruise. 2.4 maybe? Not entirely unexpected, but still not great. So I was pleased to get on the scale this morning and see that I am now 1.6 pounds up from where I was pre-cruise..meaning I lost almost a pound from this weekend. Since I didn't enter the 2ish pound gain in the app last week, the app treated it like a gain, but I am glad I did weigh myself over the weekend, because now I know I am headed back in the right direction!

Dopey Challenge Trip Non-Update: In other news, I started looking at flights for Marathon Weekend this week. I'm not booking anything because I know some airlines (i.e. Southwest) still need to release schedules for that time, but I did find a couple of contenders. I was THISCLOSE to booking at $92 direct flight down to Orlando on Frontier that would land at MCO at just about the perfect time (between 9 and 10AM)...but got cold feet just because I don't know much about that airline (it's relatively new to our area). Well, after doing some reading, I don’t think I'll book for two reasons:

1. The fare is so low because the airline charges passengers for EVERYTHING - checking bags, picking seats, even for a carry-on! So the fair really isn't $92 at all, probably more like $140 at the very least. That's still not a bad fare at all, but...

2. The bigger issue - there are only 2 other Frontier flights that day, and both of them connect through DENVER - as in, Colorado! So let's say my flight gets canceled (because it'll be January in Ohio...so it's totally possible), the only other flight they could possibly put me on that day would have a layover in Denver, meaning 8-9 hours of travel! And what if they can’t get me on one of those, and I can't fly out that day at all?! Basically that would ruin the entire weekend because I almost surely wouldn't make it to Orlando for the 5K... I just cannot take that risk

Right now United has a round-trip schedule that I like (direct flights that arrive in MCO and leave MCO at good times)...but it’s $377 round-trip, which is a little pricey. Plus, I'd have to pay baggage fees. And normally with these Marathon Weekend trips I'll fly down a day or two before Will does, and then I'll book us on the same flight back. If I look at just the return flight alone, suddenly a single ticket costs $523!! What the what?! So I'm not sure what's going on there. It also seems like a glitch in their system - a round-trip ticket costs significantly less than the one-way fare?!

I'm crossing my fingers the United prices drop or some of the airlines release better schedules...I'm hoping for good Southwest flights because I have some credits with them, but I know Southwest doesn't fly direct to/from Orlando from our airport. Arrrg! Right now I am not too thrilled with our options!

Friday, August 1: Run #3 (4 miles at half marathon goal race pace...9:45 - 9:55/mile)
Weather: 75 degrees and sunny, 65% humidity

In my little entry for yesterday I said that I need to do these goal race pace runs not on the treadmill so that I learn to pace myself...today's run just proved it!

I'm hoping to break 2:10 in my half marathon (which is just a little over a month away...where is this summer going?!). If I ran a 2:09:59 that would be a 9:55/mile pace, so I'm going to shoot for between 9:45 and 9:55 to give myself a bit of a cushion. So today I was hoping for something in that range, and was aiming to negative split the run (get progressively faster with each mile.

Splits:
Mile 1: 9:16
Mile 2: 9:23
Mile 3: 9:40
Mile 4: 10:10

NAILED IT! :rotfl2:

I mean seriously.

The good thing I can take away from this is that I think the speedwork I've been doing is paying off. But clearly I did not stick to my little plan at all here. The first two miles felt good, and then I realized I was going to hit the wall if I kept going at that pace...so I tried reeeeeally hard to slow down for the third mile. By the time the last mile started I was running out of gas and had to take two walk breaks (up until that point I hadn’t taken any). My overall average pace was 9:37...so actually not too far off of what I was going for...but if I had to run 9.1 more miles there’s no way I would have been able to keep it under 10:00/mile. Clearly I have some more practicing to do!

Saturday, August 2: Run #4 (9-mile run planned, 4-mile out-and-back completed)
Weather: I forget...thunderstorms eventually

Arrrrg...this just wasn't happening today. :(

I woke up at a decent time, but putzed around for way too long. By the time I got outside the conditions were really nice...because dark clouds were rolling in, the wine was picking up...storm's a-coming!

Originally I thought I would be okay because there was only a 30% chance of storms, so I planned out a 9-mile loop. I was about 1.5 miles away from home when I heard the first rumble of thunder. I'll run in most weather conditions, but thunderstorms is not one of them. So I quickly turned down a side street and began to head home. I could still hear more thunder and managed to make it home just before I saw the first bolt of lightning...but then I was at 4 miles done.

No problem, we have a treadmill...I'll just finish my run there. I re-filled my water bottle, tried to get my shoes dried off a bit so I would slip on the treadmill, and grabbed a movie to pop in to the DVD player (Toy Story!). This took maybe 5 minutes, but it was just long enough for me to start to really think about how much finishing the run on the treadmill would suck.

Eventually I got on the treadmill, took two steps and stopped. My shoes still felt slippery, but worse, they felt totally shot. I had shin pain, which almost never happens. So I called it a day and the shoes went in the trash. :( The shoe issues were real but I think more than anything I just mentally was not into it. Booooooo!

Sunday, August 3: Rest Day

Went to the Tribe game today!
image.png

We got free tickets from a friend in the Club Seats - great view and unlimited food. The food was delicious but very greasy and unhealthy. It was the Indians' mascot's "birthday" yesterday, so he had some buddies over to celebrate, and the Tribe won in extra innings. Woohoo!
photo.PNG

Also...my legs felt SORE today. Even though I cut my run short! I could feel it walking up the stairs. I've also noticed some hip soreness over the past couple of weeks. I'm hoping switching to new shoes next week will help, and I'm signed up for yoga on Friday too. Here's hoping I actually GO to the class.

Dopey Challenge Update - Proof of Time and Flight Frustrations

Proof of Time

On July 14 I emailed runDisney with my newest 10-miler time for corral placement (I used 2013's 10-miler time when I registered). They wrote back to me on July 17 confirming that they had received my new time.

IMG_1046.jpg

Today, they posted the link to update Proof of Time for Marathon Weekend. I logged in and found myself - my recent 10-miler time was in there and my unverified anticipated finish time is 4:28.

This got me thinking...I am not sure that I will actually be able to move up a corral at this point, unless I totally kill it in this upcoming half marathon. And by "kill it" I mean run like a 2:05 or something. I think going under 2:10 is a realistic goal for me, but not by much. So who knows if I'll even need to enter that half marathon time? Hmm..

The other thing I'm wondering is if I should correct the form itself. Right now it looks like this:
form.jpg

All of the information - time, date, etc. = is squished into the "race name" field...soooo I'm thinking the other stuff needs to be filled in.

Flights

ARRRRG. :furious:

I mentioned this in my weekly update but I am not thrilled with the flight situation right now.

It's always a little tough to book these race weekend flights. It has to be done in 3 parts...my flight to Orlando, Will's flight to Orlando, and our flight home.

I did have some success today - my flights are booked! :yay: However, Will's flights are not just yet, so I'm hesitant to celebrate too much.

MY FLIGHT TO ORLANDO (WEDNESDAY 1/7) AND HOME (MONDAY 1/12)

Just a few minutes ago I booked a round-trip ticket on United - two direct flights (pretty rare for our home airport to Orlando) for $297. I really was hoping Southwest would work out since I have credits with them and could save money by not paying to check a bag, but they released their schedule for January today and their times just didn't work out well for either flight. I'd been looking at this round-trip ticket on United for awhile now and it was listed at $377...even as recently as this morning. When I saw it drop to $297, I pounced. I know it's not going to get much lower than that.

I'll be getting into Orlando at 10:48AM...I wish it was earlier like that Frontier flight I'd been looking at, but 10:48 is still pretty good, and trying Frontier made me pretty nervous.

The return flight on Monday leaves Orlando at 5:30PM and lands at 7:56PM. It is almost perfect - it leaves Orlando relatively late in the day (thus maximizing our Disney time) and lands early enough that Will won't be a total zombie at work the next day (I'm planning on taking a few days off after the trip).

So I'm halfway there. That leaves Will's flights...

WILL'S FLIGHT TO ORLANDO (FRIDAY 1/9)

Will needs to also get into Orlando on Friday after work...meaning the flight has to take off at 5 or 6PM and get into Orlando at a somewhat decent time. The school where he works is only a 10-minute drive to the airport, so that's helpful.

No possible direct options, unfortunately. :(

1. US Airways...flight that leaves at 5:42PM and lands in Orlando at 9:38PM for $193, total travel time of 3 hours, 56 minutes (connects in Charlotte)
This option is the clear favorite right now. If only the price was lower! If I see that price drop, especially to the $150ish range, I'll most likely grab this flight. It's possible Will may just tell me to go for it anyway, because in the past he's taken Friday night flights that haven't gotten into Orlando until closer to 11 or midnight. It's definitely more than I'd like to spend but it's super perfect otherwise - good amount of time to get him to the airport after school, and the itinerary is not TOO long, even with the connector

2. Delta...flight that leaves at 5:50PM and lands in Orlando at 10:26PM for $162, total travel time of 4 hours, 36 minutes (connects in Detroit)
Cheaper than option 1 and only 40 minutes of extra travel time...could be a contender.

3. Southwest...flight that leaves at 4:40PM and lands in Orlando at 10:20PM for $141, total travel time of 5 hours, 40 minutes (connects in Detroit)
Cheapest option of the 3, especially since Will has a small Southwest credit and wouldn’t have any baggage fees. But this may be cutting it too close to get there on time after work, so I'm not sure how realistic it is. Plus, the travel time is the longest.

OUR FLIGHT HOME (MONDAY 1/12)

By booking my round-trip ticket I've sort of locked us in to the almost perfect United flight coming home. Why is it almost perfect?

Because to buy a ticket for Will for that flight right now costs $457!!!!!!!!!!!! For a freaking 2-hour flight!!! :faint:

So I am reeeeeaaaallly hoping that the price for that flight will drop significantly. I mentioned this madness in my weekly update because when I started looking at this flight on Thursday it was listed at $523 (!!!!). I even saw that price as recently as this morning. Now that I've seen it drop once I'm hoping it'll continue to go down, and the nice thing about United is that I can look at their seating chart - there are still plenty of open seats, so it's not like Will is possibly going to miss out on getting a ticket.

It's frustrating because a round-trip ticket is just so much cheaper! But the only options for Will to fly down on Friday night either leave too early (3:45PM) or land way too late (another flight leaves at 5:15ish and connects in Newark, but it won't land in Orlando until 11:30 PM). I feel like there's a glitch in United's system or something...especially since I purchased a 1-way fare just like the one I am looking at in November (leaving Orlando at 5ish and landing at our airport at 8ish) for $140. UGH!

So I will probably be a nervous wreck until we figure out what to do about that return flight. I really hope I didn't mess up by booking this flight...because worst-case scenario, we either pay a LOT more than we want to for it or we fly home separately. I do not want either of those things to happen! Stupid airlines! :furious:

Shannon - would you be able to book a round-trip ticket with an open-ended return so then you would have a flight for Will from Orlando-home and then he would have a flight from home-Orlando the next time you go to Disney? Do they even do those anymore? I know my brother had one a few years ago, but I have never done it myself.

We have a key hidden outside of our house in case we ever lock ourselves out or someone needs to get in when we aren't home/there is an emergency.

I've never heard of that before. Thanks for the tip! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I'll be doing that soon, for sure. I still can't believe I did that!

Hey Shannon - What about a flight early Saturday morning? I know you will be running the 1/2 marathon that morning and if timed right perhaps you both can end up at the hotel around the same time Saturday morning. I know it isn't ideal but airline prices (and times) can be ridiculous.

Yay for selling your SparkleSkirt. I am a fan and have several. I didn't realize there was a Facebook group where members buy and sell. I will have to find that. I have one that I bought and just don't really care for it. All the others I love!

Also, congrats on the speed work. I need to start adding some speed work to my workouts...just have to find the right time!

Ah! Great idea! I'm glad you mentioned this. :) I saw this post and suggested it to Will last night and he seemed somewhat interested, so it's definitely an option. Thank you!! :goodvibes

I just don't know what is going on with that flight I am looking at coming back from Orlando! I checked again this morning and it's still sitting at $457. Crazy!

:goodvibes Now that I have sold that one I have 4 (solid black, solid pink, solid purple and the red MiniTech). I'm sort of itching to get another one. Aren't they the best?!

There are at least 2 groups! "SparkleAddicts" and "Sparkle FanZone." I sold my skirt through the FanZone page. Ladies post there a lot and the skirts sell quickly, often for pretty decent prices (especially if it's a retired pattern)! Which skirt are you looking to sell?
Also, congrats on the speed work. I need to start adding some speed work to my workouts...just have to find the right time!
Thanks! :goodvibes I do think it is helping, but you're right that it's tough to fit it in. It only seems to work for me if it's explicitly part of my schedule. :confused3

I didn't know flight schedules were available for Jan yet, so your post prompted me to look! I never book this far in advance, because I am always afraid the price will go down and I'll miss out, but I went for it! Southwest was about $30 cheaper than JetBlue, but I have a $50 credit with JetBlue, so they win :)

I took JetBlue this past Jan for the marathon weekend and the price seems to be almost the same, so I don't think it will change much, at least not down!

I've been looking at the United flights for awhile but someone posted on the Budget Board about Southwest opening their schedule on Monday...seeing that post was what sort of made me start to REALLY look into things. :)

Congrats on getting your flights worked out - and with a credit! Even better. We don't have JetBlue around us :confused3 I have heard they are very good though.

This and That

Dopey Challenge Updates - Flights Booked! And 1 ADR Change

Flights - Booked!

Well, that didn't take long to sort out. :)

I went into the flight issues in my last post - my flights were booked but Will's weren't. Normally he'll take a late Friday night flight into Orlando and we'll fly direct home on Monday. We found a Friday night flight we liked, but the best Monday night flight (which I was already booked on) was ridiculously priced at $457 one-way. Seriously, whaaaaaa?

After I posted about my frustrations, I got some great suggestions from you fine folks! :goodvibes rpcvpanama's idea for Will to fly into Orlando on Saturday was particularly interesting - I don't know how this hadn't occurred to us before.

I mentioned it to Will on Monday night...and the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like the obvious choice. But I didn't want to push him into it - he would be the one taking the flight so it had to be his decision.

Somehow we'll get there...somehow.
WDWHolidayEdit-226.jpg

When I got home from work yesterday, I pulled all of the possible flights up on the computer and we talked about it. Out of all of the flights going to Orlando on Friday evening, we agreed that the only realistic possibility was the US Airways flight I'd originally been looking at (something like 5:45ish take-off, with a connector, landing in Orlando at 9:38PM - a little less than 4 hours of travel time). Every other flight either took off from our airport too early - so it would be too tough to get there after work - or landed in Orlando WAY too late, or had a really long layover, thus adding up to 5-6 hours of total travel time.

Then we looked at flights to Orlando on Saturday. And there it was - a direct flight through United taking off at about 8:30, and landing in Orlando at about 11.

:scratchin

The obvious disadvantage here is that he wouldn't be on-property as early...probably noon on Saturday at the earliest with DME. So that's less Disney time for him and no way to spectate the half marathon.

But talking through the advantages, this option was emerging as the clear winner. The biggest plus is that he can come home on Friday and just have a normal evening at home. He can't sleep on planes (not a problem for yours truly :teeth:), so if he did take a Friday PM flight that would mean a full day of work, flying, navigating the airport, taking DME and enduring their horrible new video (seriously, it's the worst), and then arriving on-property at about 11PM.

That is a FULL day. Exhausting to think about...and something that makes me feel guilty about these race weekends every single time. And even if he did all of that, he'd probably sleep through the half marathon anyway because Friday will have been so tiring - so no spectating. In general he doesn't sleep very late, but he estimated that after a full day like that he'd probably sleep until 9:30...and if all goes well I'm guessing I'll be done with the race by 9.

Eventually it seemed like the only real difference between arriving Friday vs. Saturday is that he'd lose 2.5 hours of real Disney time (Saturday between 9:30 and noon). He decided that was worth it to skip a crazy Friday.

Other pluses - one less day to pay to park his car at the airport (he'll be dropping me off on Wednesday on his way to work so that we'll only have one car there - so that's about $7 saved, but it's something!), one less night that the monster pup has to be at doggy camp ($30 per night of camp), less guilt for me...

And last but not least - this meant I could book him a round-trip ticket on United so that he'd be on the same returning flight as I am. The price was still listed at $297...so we just went ahead and did it! :dance3: Yes, it's possible these prices will drop, but we fly to Orlando enough that I feel like we have a decent idea of what a good RT price is from our area. And this isn't bad. I can't see it getting TOO much better than this. I was also able to log into his flight and assign him a seat next to me, so that's cool.

The downsides of flying United are that we'll have to pay baggage fees (which will apply to me only...Will plans on bringing a carry-on only). We've been flying Southwest a lot lately so I'm used to no bag fees! Also, United has a history of changing their flight times, so I'm fully expecting that to happen. Woof to that.

Who knows, maybe neither of us will end up liking this schedule change. Or maybe this will be the way to do things from now on. We'll see!

But YAY to getting the flights booked!!!!!! And a HUGE "thank you" to rpcvpanama for suggesting a Saturday morning flight! :worship:

ADR Change - Captain's Grille, I never knew ye

Besides 2.5 hours of Will's Disney time, the only other casualty of the weekend will be our Saturday brunch ADR at Captain's Grille.

WDWHolidayEdit-225.jpg

I'm not broken up about this at all. When I posted about our ADRs last month, I even described this one as the "least important." No big deal!

So instead I'll just mosey right outside and head to the Boardwalk Bakery for a post-race breakfast sandwich!!

WDWHolidayEdit-228.jpg

I just tried one of these for the first time in January. SO delicious. :yay:

Wine & Dine Half Marathon - Small Flight Change

Last night Southwest called me (so impressed that they do this!) to let me know that my return flight from Wine & Dine weekend has changed - it now takes off and lands 30 minutes later than originally scheduled. Good news - 30 more minutes of Disney time! :thumbsup2 Bad news - I'm going to get home soooooo late and will have to go back to work the next morning. That will be rough! :faint:

Coast-to-Coast! Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend 2015

OKAY SO. This is happening next year! :hyper:

Imagine the "2014" is really a "2015."
DLR-Half-wide.jpg

(source)

One of my friends and I have been talking about this for a few months now. We'll both be participating in Marathon Weekend in January, so why not try to grab a Coast-to-Coast medal?! We both agreed we'd want to do the 5K + Dumbo...so that would be 6 WDW medals + 4 DLH medals + 1 C2C medal for me in 2015...:hyper:

I'm pretty sure another friend will join us as well (in spectator form only).

We all definitely want to stay on-property. I know there are hotels really close to DL, but we want to be immersed in the magic! Since there are 3 of us, I thought we could try to go big and rent points at the Grand Californian. I know it's next-to-impossible to get a room there, but I was thinking if we tried right at the 11-month mark we'd have a shot.

I've had enough experience with runDisney to know that the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is normally over Labor Day weekend. I also know that they normally publish the following year's race date in the current race program (for example, the 2015 Princess Half Marathon dates were published in the program for this year's Princess Half Weekend). But when I pulled up this year's DLH program - NO 2015 dates! What?! :headache:

I know it's not like they won't have the race or anything, but this throws a wrench into my point renting plan. If I rent those points, it's non-refundable, so I need to have the correct dates. I emailed runDisney about it and got the following response:

runDisney said:
Shannon,

Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend. Event and registration dates for the 2015 event are being finalized. Please follow the official runDisney accounts on Facebook and Twitter for the latest announcements. You can also sign up for email reminders on rundisney.com.

If you have any further questions, please visit www.rundisney.com.

Have a magical day!
runDisney

So helpful! Oh wait, no...no it's not. :sad2:

And so I wait...something I have never been good at! But the good thing here is that my WDW Annual Pass doesn't expire until February, and I'm pretty sure registration for the DLH normally opens in late January...so I should be able to register early! This will be VERY important as 2015 will be the 10th anniversary of the Disneyland Half Marathon...so registration will be even crazier than it normally is! But I'm very excited for this! It'll be my first time at Disneyland since I was a toddler (so for all intents and purposes...my first time at Disneyland).

As an aside, they started pre-orders for the DLH Dooney pattern, which looks almost exactly like this year's WDW Dooney pattern (which I did not like). So now I'm wondering if maybe they stick with the same kind of pattern all year and then go with something totally new the following year. Also, from the last few race weekends they seem to open the pre-order about a month ahead of the start of the races. Hmm...

My next SparkleSkirt

SparkleSkirts posted this on Twitter yesterday...and I must have it.

Supposedly they are debuting this skirt ("Haunted") at the DLH expo, so I am hoping it'll be on the website soon after and I can snatch it up. :teeth:
