In the weeds cancellation question

Here is a scenario and I am not sure how it works!

I book a vacation in a UY that requires me to borrow a certain number of points from the following year UY. I then cancel the original reservation and rebook a DVC room that costs less points.

With the "extra" points that are left over from my original reservation, do they always put back the current UY points or do they put back my "borrowed" points in a restricted status (i.e. must use that year - cannot bank)?

If the amount left over was less then the number of current UY points I used in the original reservation, could I still bank them after making the reservation switch given the new reservation would still be using all the borrowed points?

I hope that makes sense!

I see this happening a lot in the VGF because of the point cost. I book a 1 bedroom at 11 months using high points and I need to borrow some to complete the reservation. At 7 months, I find a different resort that takes fewer points and decide to try it. I switch to the lower cost resort and have "left over" points from the prior reservation. I am hoping I could turn around and bank those points if all the borrowed points were still needed for the second reservation. If not, I could see always have extra restricted (must use this year) points!

It's the latter - once you borrow the points, you need to use them in that use year. They can't be put back.

However, if the amount you borrowed is less than your replacement booking needs, you can make sure you use the borrowed points first in your replacement booking, leaving you with only current use year points remaining. Those points can be banked.

Sometimes if you have a complicated set of bookings you can be left with borrowed points sitting unused in your account that you'd prefer were allocated to a booking so you maximize the current UY points left over. In that case, you can call member services and they can rearrange the allocation.

Thank you! That is great news.

This is one of the reasons that planning and UY are important. If you miss the banking window or cancel after 31 days out, your points will be seriously limited.
