I know exactly your predictament. I have a 37 inch tv and, after seeing the Bose demo at WDW a year ago, I am finally getting a PLASMA tv. It's like you are there - on the 50-yard line, in the ER, on the beach..........
Yes they are still expensive but not like they were a year ago. A 36-inch is about $1000. And they come with stereo speakers and are HDTV. Plus you can hang it on the wall or the ceiling . If you go to www.plasmatv.com you can check prices. Let me know what you decide.

Two words of advice if you decide to purchase a projection TV:
SERVICE CONTRACT
IMHO service contracts are a ripoff, but I would not be without one for my projection TV. I didn't have one for my first big screen set and, when one of the tubes went bad, I had to scrap the set. The replacement set was a floor model and Best Buy threw in a 3-year service plan as part of the purchase price. I average one service call per year and the price of parts alone has justified the cost of the contract (even though it didn't really cost me anything). I have since renewed the contract and will keep it in force until I replace the TV.
I don't know what the service issues might be with a plasma screen TV, but you should definitely consider the cost of repairs versus the cost of a service contract.
We have a 29" flat screen Toshiba that we have been very happy with so far. I do not know for certain, but am fairly sure, that they probably make a TV in the larger screen size you seek. We bought ours at Best Buy, got a good price, and did take them up on their service contract offer.
So far, so good...no TV problems. Now watch, I've probably just jinxed myself!
We have a Sony Wega 36" flat screen. It's a very nice tv. My Mom bought a digital Sony 40" flat screen tv that is beautiful! My DH and Brother-inlaw are already fighting for it! Hopefully Mom will out live the tv! Good luck in your search.
I know that it's bad form to point out typos, but since I work for the company, I am bound by an employment agreement to point out that there is only one "L" in Philips.
