Dpreview.com has just posted a review for Sigma's new 35mm f1.4 lens. Its a pretty impressive review:

"Every now and then we come across a camera or lens that hits a sweet spot of image quality, usability and price that makes it an easy recommendation. The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM is just such a beast - it manages the impressive trick of being substantially cheaper than the camera manufacturers' equivalents while matching or beating them optically. If you're after a top quality fast prime at this focal length it should be right at the top of your short list, and it easily earns our top award."

Its currently listed at B & H for pre-order for $899. This could be another quality option for the dark rides.

$899 is still a big price tag, but if it's as good as they say then it would be worth it. I know the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 deserves every bit of the excellent reputation it has.

Very big price for those of us who are more amateur. But I do wonder, how much *better* is it than a $100 nifty fifty. Obviously, it's a bit wider and a bit faster. So those things are definitely good..... But it's only fractionally faster, so it is really worth nearly 10 times the price. That's a rhetorical subjective question. Obviously there are some extremely discerning shooters where each improvement in quality is worth quite a bit of $$$. But I wonder if the lens would even make too much of a difference for the rest of us.

I am thinking along the same lines. I have asked other photog's this question and would like to ask everyone here. Is there a noticeable difference between 35mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.8 with all of the other settings identical?

Its all about, "Is it worth it to me?". If that focal length is important to you, along with great optics and HSM, then it might be. I have a HSM lens and for what I use it for its very important and was worth it. I have the Sigma 30. Even though its listed as HSM, for the Pentax system it is not, but I don't need HSM for what I use it. At $439 (current price), I would take the 30. I have a feeling that the 30 may be going away in lieu of the more expensive (aka more profit margin) 35. This is just another option if it fits into your photography/lens plan. Just another tool available for the toolbox.

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is a crop sensor lens, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 is a full frame lens.

I've been following this lens for a while now, and having intent of purchasing it in 2013. After buying a 70-200, 14-24, and 24-120 plus two full frame cameras in 2012, I think I at least need to hold off until 2013!

At $899, this lens offers great value.

Nice catch, I forgot that is was a FF lens versus the APS-C 30.
