If you are planning on purchasing Disney's Trip Insurance AND flying out of CANADA - please read and be aware!

My husband & I had to cancel our one-shot at a kid-free vacation a few months ago. It was for late September. We paid for Disney's Insurance just like before. For the main reason that Disney will cover the cost of airfare if the trip was cancelled.

Well, we cancelled for a covered reason. My mom was diagnosed with heart failure. My parents would not be able to look after our kids.

We only received $200 out of our $840 claim. After a few phone calls the past week, today Guest Services advised me that yes, Disney's policy is to refund airfare. Yes, this applies to Canadians (as stated on Disney's website). But ONLY if the airfare is purchased for a flight ORIGINATING in the States! Because we purchased our airfare with Air Canada (Toronto), we will not be covered...

My TA did not know about this clause. The insurance policy sent to me does not states this. The CMs on the phone do not know this. And Travel Guard specifically told me that yes, the flight would be covered - but NEVER offered up the information that it needs to be an American flight, not Canadian. :headache:

Very good to know. But sorry you had to find out the hard way. Disney should be better versed in their Trip Insurance, esp. if the flights originate outside of the U.S.
Fortunately for me, we usually make the 3 hr drive to Seattle for cheap fares, and I have an annual travel Insur policy with CAA.

Your TA certainly should have known that Disney's insurance is NOT the best choice for Canadians!

I would also let the agency owner know that you fell through the cracks because of the TA not knowing what they should have about insurance for their clients.

Huh?!? I'm sorry, but I'm so confused by this OP, as you are completely incorrect. Travel Guard absolutely will cover airfare originating in Canada. :confused3

I posted this elsewhere, but I'll repeat it here to clarify for fellow Canadians. I personally have made a claim with Travel Guard for a flight originating in Canada (Sunwing) and received the full amount of my flight back.

My guess is that the OP received a credit or something of that nature from the airline and that is why they are not being reimbursed. Or the reasoning for cancellation was one that was not covered.

If I may suggest OP, you shouldn't be talking to Guest Services in the first place about a claim made through Travel Guard. We all know how incorrect the information of various CM's is. ;)

Travel insurance is tricky business and things like pre-existing conditions, and a whole host of other factors can complicate statements about the policies and coverage.

My understanding is and always has been that Disney offered insurance covered flights from Canada.

To say otherwise would be a big change that I would think would have travel agents posting all over this board.

I have to agree that I feel you have have been partly misinformed. I recognize that the CM's you spoke to said as you wrote -- but I believe their accuracy over time speaks for itself.

I was on the fence on getting Disney Insurance for my upcoming Disney Cruise. Always concerned about some sort fo claim issue with getting insurance from a US Company.

I usually go with RBC Insurance sine I had 2 really good claim expereinces with them over the years.

DW's sister is fighting cancer and, was given till the end of August. She's still with us and we're heading out to MCO mid-November. It's good she's still with us, but we now have that insurance in case the inevitable happens sooner than later.
I think she's holding out till Christmas, so we hope she lasts that long at least, but if we need it, I hope it works out ok for getting back/reimbursed. In the event of the death of a family member not travelling with us, we have to provide proof of death to the insurance company via a doctor's note. (something to add to DBIL's hardship) :(

Thank you for letting me know about your experience! The only reason I had phoned Guest Services is because the lady at Travel Guard could not give me any answers and kept telling me to phone my TA or Disney. :confused3 I honestly think she didn't have a clue.

I phoned Travel Guard again today (after reading your post) and am waiting for the Claims Analyst to phone me directly at this point.

As for the $200 received - not a clue. I never received a refund (partial or otherwise) from anyone for the airfare.

And most assuredly my cancellation reason is covered under the policy. That, at least, was verified by Travel Guard a few times over the past couple of months.

Thanks Knox. I have to admit, I was quite surprised when being told my airfare would not be covered because it originated from Canada. Surprised that no one on DIS has mentioned this in the past year or so that is. I mean, DIS knows everything Disney related! :lmao:

Thank you for letting me know about your experience!

You're welcome! Hope it helps. Please keep us posted on the outcome. :)

Clearly she didn't. I hate to say it, but you are now dealing with an insurance company, not Disney, not a TA. She was simply 'passing the buck' is all.

Like Knox said, this would be a HUGE change that would have travel agents posting all over the DIS. ;)

lol, OP, seeing as the TA was correct, I really hope you didn't take Minnie's advice and call the agency owner! :scared1:

Sorry about your sister in law I hope she continues to stay ahead of the battle.

Make sure you understand the pre existing condition clause with your insurance.

Last year my friend and I were down in WDW he had his bag stolen with all his documentation. We were supposed to go on a cruise but couldn't because he only a temporary passport (after the longest day of my life traveling back and forth to Miami) We had travel insurance but stolen identification isn't covered, we lost our money for the cruise and then had to pay for the added days at wdw. We made the best of it. As far as I'm concerned why pay for insurance when they won't cover you.
