I have had to establish a different user name to ask this question so that my girlfriend doesn't stumble upon it.

I am planning on proposing to her when we take our trip to Disney in August and I need to know if an engagement ring sets off the metal detector. If it does not that is great, but if it does I am going to have to find a way to keep her from finding out.

I appriciate any help and suggestions.

I didn't know if this should go under transportation or weddings & honeymoons?

If it's made of usual jewelry metals like gold, platinum, and diamond, I would guess no. If jewelry like that set off the metal detectors, all of us would be removing our rings at the security checkpoint. Just make sure the box it's in isn't made of any metal.

If you're going to pack it in your carry-on, put it inside an article of clothing (like a sock or inside a folded shirt).

I agree with Obi-Wan Pinobi (I just wanted to type that).
I always wear my wedding and engagement ring, plus 2 pretty heavy rings on my right hand.
That's a good hint about the box. My ring came in a box that was padded and I wouldn't have guessed it was made of metal, but it was. The jewler could probably help you out with some kind of box that would not have metal and wouldn't look suspicious on the Xray.

That's a good tip about the box. Most jewelry boxes are made of metal and covered with velvet. Some jewelry stores will offer a small satin bag for the ring and then they have a cardboard ring box that the bag fits into. Usually this is used for rings that have a very wide band and won't fit into a standard ring box but i'm sure if you asked, they would give it to you. Congratulations!
