IMHO mods v. values

We just returned from 9 magical days at Riverside and after several trips my DH and I realized that in the furture we will either stay at a value (POP our fav!) or a Deluxe. While the room in a mod are a bit bigger than value, and the mods have a waterslide, and the mods have bell sevice, we just didn't need to pay the extra $75-100 a night for that. I LOVE waterslides but in looking back I only rode the waterslide ONCE!:sad2: We took our own luggage to the room and didn't have four adults in the room. My DH promised me the next time we go if we stay at a value, we will go to one of the water parks.

Now clearly, we love the theming of the deluxes and we will save our pennies when we really want to stay there. But in the meantime values are just fine for us.

I posted this for all those families who are wondering if they need to spend the extra $$.

Values still had great theming, Disney magic and very polite CM's.

Happy planning. :wizard:

I'm glad you had the chance to try a Mod, but when we stayed at POR we didn't think it was a great representative of the Mods in general. It really let us down, and had it been the only Mod we had ever tried I would likely agree with you. However, we had already spent several vacations as CSR and think it can't be beat  We strongly dislike the values and we don't care enough about hotels to spend the extra for a deluxe, so Mods are the way to go for this family. I think it's something everyone should try at least once, but of course we will all like different things- which is good because it makes it easier to get reservations ;)

The reason we liked the moderates are the fact that the rooms are bigger, the refrigerators are free of charge, there are bicycle/surrey bike and watercraft rentals and there are full service restaurants on the premises.

Our stays are usually 10 days so, even though we don't spend an enormous amount of time in our room, I do appreciate the extra space in the room. I also like the two sinks which are a plus when everybody is getting ready in the a.m.

If our trips were shorter, I would definitely consider a stay in a value resort.

I totally agree with the OP. I only stay at values or deluxes - I haven't stayed at a moderate since 2005 (and I go to Disney 2-3 times a year!). I find the moderates are simply not worth the money, especially now that they are pushing $200 a night with tax during most seasons. I think they are very nice looking and the ground are pretty, but for the price, it's not worth it to me and you don't get enough to jusitfy the $$$.

I find I have better located rooms in values than moderates - my rooms at moderates were almost always far from everything, and very isolated from the rest of the resort (think Trinidad South here!). Moderates don't have balconies. I find the values have better food courts even. And I find the buses are just horrible at moderates with multiple stops and standing-room-only every single trip (thinking of POR here!). Usually for a few more dollars a night, I could upgrade to the Swan or AKL or WL, and those places are definitely worth it - balconies, interior corridors, smaller resort, more centrally located, better amenities, etc. :)

So right now, unless I get a fantastic discount, I don't stay at moderates anymore.

And this is the reason Disney offers something for everyone. I can't justify over $250 a night for a deluxe, don't like the noise or the crowds at the value and am perfectly content and happy at my moderate. We are lucky to have so many choices.

I agree.

Although I've never stayed in a value but have been a guest of someone for an evening at the pool. I've stayed in a few of the mods, many of the deluxes & own DVC. I love the mods. They have so much to offer & seem a little quieter & more relaxing than the values.

Thumbs up from me for the mods!

Agreed!! :thumbsup2

I loved reading everyone's replies. I have stayed at every mod but right now, IMHO they are just too expensive for what you get. I remember the good old days when I payed $90 to stay at CSR! Oh how I miss those days. I really just wanted to post it for families worried that there were settling for the Motel 6 if they stayed at a value.

We have stayed at both the values and moderates. What is the determining factor for us is whether we need one room or two. If it is two rooms, we stay at a value. The nice thing about the values is that they offer great Disney theming so I don't feel that I am missing out on the amenties of a moderate. The important thing for us is staying on property, so whatever allows us to do that is where we stay.

I have stayed offsite before. I also stayed at 2 values (POP and ASSp). Been at CSR and POR. Also been to CR, SoG and OKW. My favorite is obviously OKW, but having stayed at quite afew, I have compared and will tell you that IMO the value pools are full of kids, kids and kids. POP seemed to be a more spacious resort and cleaner than ASSp. The moderates seem to be a huge step up from the values to me. I think it will depend on when you go and stay at a value because we went one year and stayed 1 week before Memorial day and into Memorial Day weekend at POP. The week prior was relaxing and fine. It sold out come that weekend and it was not at all relaxing. Just my opinion.
