Imagineer dreams up a Totoro ride

I have to be honest, I have no idea what that is.

My Neighbor Totoro is a Japanese animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki. It's pretty much a classic (there are nods to it all through Toy Story, and Lasseter is a big fan of Miyazaki).

Disney (I believe mostly thanks to Lasseter) have the exclusive distribution rights for Miyasaki's movies in the US, but I don't think that (or Lasseter's fanboyism) is enough to get this ride built. :(

If you really haven't seen this movie, I'd strongly recommend checking it out (alongside Spirited Away).

[edit] typos.

It's a movie from Studio Ghibli. I have seen a few of their movies... a colleague is a big fanboy. They are very pacifist, almost to the point of being overkill. As I remember (it's been a while), the films seemed to be obliquely implying that Japan wasn't responsible for WWII and that the US were the bad guys, which to me, at least, was offensive. Finally, there was a lot of Japanese cultural stuff in the movies which just didn't translate too well. I didn't like any of the three or so movies I saw in really any way, but the animation was good :/.

How would this fit in to DHS with the new theming?

Disney has been the one releasing the Miyazaki movies to the US in english. Not exactly the same as the original pixar and disney relationship but the movies are great and they could easily fill a new land with attractions designed from them.

I'm trying to remember the last time Disney built an attraction that wasn't based on a hugely popular blockbuster movie.

? Expedition Everest maybe?

I can't see them doing a Totoro attraction in the US parks, never mind an entire land. There is almost 0% name recognition here, and I'm not sure how much crossover there is between its small fan base and WDW/DLR visitors.

But I could completely see this going into Tokyo DL.

Everest would probably be the last one stateside. Mystic Manor would be the last one outside the US.

I was going to say Mystic Manor and Grizzly Gulch in Kong Kong are new and not based on a movie (both great by the way). I guess some of the original stuff in DCA like Grizzly River Rapids is not based on a movie, but that isn't exactly brad new

Some recent upgrades to tides not based on movies (Test Track, Soarin over the World). Not sure how old Mission Space is

Mission space opened in 2003.

This would be incredible! However, I think it's highly unlikely. Unless I'm mistaken, Disney sold the distribution rights to Studio Ghibli films to GKIDS a couple years ago.
