I'm with Kathy: Safety concerns w/ social media

That's good to know for those who use Twitter. Does it allow you to block certain people from seeing your information or it has to be all?

You all are under the impression that because you say "friends only" that it's private.

Say it- forget it- write it- regret it

Things happen. Glitches that make posts public, "friends" who repost or screen shot, not to mention these sites save all information (I believe the last thing I read on that topic was they are saving info for 10 years)

Just remember- if you post ANYTHING on the internet, think of it as being there forever for anyone. Don't listen to privacy settings because they can change at a whim and then everything you wanted private is exposed.

I took it as they were saying "why does ANYONE care" not just thieves.

Why post your location for anyone? Who cares where you are, what you're doing, what you're eating, what you're wearing, who you're with, what you bought, what illness you have currently, etc etc etc....

The joys of social media

It all depends on ones circle of friends, I think you are making a blanket generalization which although is true for you isn't true for everyone.

I personally enjoy seeing where my friends are and what they are doing and the joys they are experiencing in life. I love knowing what beers my friends are drinking, what food they are eating, what awesome Metal shirts they are wearing, etc..I know for a fact that the majority of friends I have on Facebook feel the same as I do because they "Like" my posts and comment on them.

I even enjoy reading about people I don't know, hence why I enjoy reading trip reports. :goodvibes

Security wise I've taken measures but as I said earlier all one needs to do is Google their name and you will quickly realize how much information on you s out there for public consumption, even if you aren't on any Social Media sites.

If someone is stocking you with the intention of robbing you its going to happen where or not you post your location or not.

Not one single thing comes up under my full real name. It even says "0" in the united states and I'm most definitely in the US. There are measures you can take to stay "off" the internet while still being on. Not even a single image that comes up if remotely related to me. Even my maiden name.

I'm not sure what your point is. Most of us don't care all that much, and take appropriate precautions as necessary.

I guess it depends on ones age, and what one is involved in.

Not related to Social Media when I search my name the following pops up: College Graduation, Newspaper Articles I'm mentioned in for my volunteer work, Newspaper articles referencing planning committees I've been on, my high school graduation from 1998, names database, radaris, itellius and white pages.

I'm just not worried about it and I enjoy being out there and accessible to people who want to find me. I've had 2 people that I knew in the Disney College Program in 1999 find me, I've had 3 childhood friends I lost touch with find me and a long out of touch distant relative contact me.... so for me the reward far outweighs the risk. Not saying it should for everyone just speaking personally.

I have my Facebook security super tight and my address is deliberately wrong. Takes one to a vacant lot. So I post whatever I want, they can have whatever they want from the lot.

Like in the Blues Brothers movie, when the police showed up at Wrigley Field, because it was the address listed on Elwoods driver's license
:rotfl2:

Absolutely on board with keeping things fairly close to the vest. And folks that think Facebook is the least interested in your security are, well, no disrespect, but naive. Its in Facebook's best interest to extract and splatter absolutely as much about you as they possibly can, and why most of their reaction to privacy issues amounts to superficial lip service. Your info is practically their currency. Your posts are only as private as a cut-and-paste can make them, eg not at all.

Several years ago, my DD posted on FB the exact dates of our then-upcoming WDW trip. And I told her to take it down, because I had absolutely no interest in her broadcasting that we would be out of state on specific dates with her full name. Told her that when we got back, she could post whatever she wanted.

If you don't think social media is being used by malevolent folks, you're kidding yourself. Yes, you can use some caution, but, to adapt an axiom from my late grandmother, "the least said is easiest repaired."

I found this very upsetting: That Kathy had so many negative responses re: her being in WDW via FourSquare. It got me to wondering if this is a gendered response. I am very outspoken on Twitter (I am a comedian as well as a political junkie. I won't say which way I lean here because it is not appropriate) and I get all kinds of threats on social media based on the beliefs that I occasionally spout. It seemed as though the men (specifically Sean) were flabbergasted that she got such negative reaction to her check-ins.To me, this implied that they do not get these responses. Could this have been because she's a woman? I honestly don't know, but I think it's an interesting question. (I am NOT trying to rock any boats, I just think it's an interesting question) What do you think?

(PS Kathy and Theresa, I really think you are great. The work you do for Give Kids The World brings me tears, I love listening to you!)

Thank you for listening to us. :)

My thing is always don't post anything public that you wouldn't say in person. If I would tell you in person that I was going to be out of town on certain days, etc. you make the list. I pared my "Friends" list on FB way back to this standard when my husband was deployed.

first rule of social media...DO NOT ASSUME THAT WHAT YOU POST HAS A LIMITED AUDIENCE.

Even Facebook, with it's morass of privacy options, keeps changing what those options do so you can never be certain. And it's up to the software and the programmers and the other engineers to make sure they keep them private. A simple programming error, and "oops, so sorry that post was visible to your boss..."

And never mind whether someone with access to the data might be stealing it and selling it. There are just too many factors in which you need to place trust, and none of them are particularly trustworthy.

And I work in IT. :)

I've been back and forth on 4SQ. I will use it for a while, then stop for months. It really doesn't seem to provide ANY benefit to me, except for certain promotional things I get involved with where they use 4SQ specifically and is really the only reason I started in the first place (and it was all to try and win a ipod shuffle - I got T-shirts instead :) ).

I used it once at WDW to see how many "points" I could get in a single day.

There was a competitor called Gowalla that closed a year or two ago, that was a bit different. You could "collect" things like Mickey Ears, and each one was uniquely numbered, so lower numbered ones were coveted more. Disney had joined with them and there were various "adventures" or something like that (check in at all the world Showcase pavilions, etc.). I don't remember it being more personal, as in easier to track individual people.

I was at a conference recently and attended a session on the use of technology in stalking and I was pretty floored (and I feel pretty knowledgeable about technology). One of the tips they suggested that I've adopted is that you make sure to turn off location services on your photos; otherwise, it is possible to extract the location data and learn where your home is (take a picture of your children in your backyard, for instance) or learn where you are. As the mom of a teenaged daughter, I feel pretty cautious about this stuff-I'm more concerned about her safety than about our house being broken into when we're on vacation, of course.

If I ever post about being on vacation on FB-and I do-I'll always mention something about our house sitter :)
