I'm sorry, but this just isn't fair!

I have a walking disability so when I go to Disney I use an ecv (rent offsite). Well, because of an accident my DH had years ago (smashed both feet), he too has a problem walking long distances and just can't do Disney anymore. I guess thats why he said we weren't going back anytime soon. I told him the other day that when we do go back he will be using an ecv too. (he seems more receptive to go now....)

Anyways, we are a family of 5 that will be going. POR is where we stayed before and want stay again. Because of the room size tho, 2 ecv's would be real hard to get in the room to charge every night.

I called CRO and asked if there would be enough room and they said not really. So basically my only options are 2 rooms at a value resort or a deluxe room. Well, I don't want to stay at a value (I have nothing against them, have stayed there twice now, we just want POR since it is our favorite resort). I also don't have the money to stay in a deluxe. I'm sorry, but I find this unfair! So I said to the guy (very nicely) so if a family of 4 (typical room occupancy) wants to stay at Disney and both parents are disabled we have to get 2 rooms or a deluxe? There is nothing to accomodate us? (Handicapped rooms are a king or queen bed only...sleeps 2). Yep....those are our choices. Oh yeah, a cabin at Ft. Wilderness. No thanks.

The point is, since my DH and I both have a walking disability we are being forced to pay more money for a place to stay. Yes, I know we can stay offsite for less, but thats besides the point. I won't go so far as to say we are being discriminated against, but I'd say its a fine line!
Thanks for letting me vent............

Sorry about your situation. Maybe since you had voiced your opinion it had opened their eyes in how they can accomadate two people who are handicapped. Maybe you could talk to the manager about your situation.

Is it possible they could accomodate you by finding an alternative way to plug in the ECV's? Maybe in a locked storage area or unused and locked meeting room so you wouldn't have to bring them in your room.

POR only accomodates 4 unless you have a toddler in a cot. So for a family of 5 the only options are two value or a deluxe. I know, we deal with this too. It wouldn't matter whether there was a handicap or not in your situation. I feel your pain on this.

I'm sorry! :( It really does seem like they could do something to accomodate you... :(

Just my two cents... The cabins at Fort Wilderness are very nice, you should take a look at some photos. I'd love to stay there. I've camped there several times and the resort is soooo beautiful.

Actually, at POR they have a trundle bed that accomodates a small child. My son was 11 when he slept in it with room to spare. He would still have no problem fitting in it today which is why POR is a good choice for us.

We've stayed there before and the kids don't really want to go back there. Plus by staying there you are dependent on buses to go within the resort and if there is one thing I can't stand is having to rely on bus transport when being at Disney with an ecv.

Besides, again with the cabins I am being "forced" to stay at a more expensive place.
My problem with it all is that I do not have the option to be able to stay where I want because my DH and I have a disability.

Does POR have lock-offs? I don't know why they couldn't give you two rooms, for the price of one, if the room's design doesn't accomodate disabilities. I'm sure this would be up to them but to me it would be the right thing to do.

Maybe you could call back, ask to speak with a manger there, explain your situation and ask them if there's anything they can do, as far as "special" accomidations, IE possibly getting a 2nd room for half-price or something? I'm sorry to hear this:(

If you are eligible for any of the codes that come out from time to time, you'd still be better off with two rooms at POR at the $79 rate than you would with one deluxe. Some cro CM's are more receptive than others. I'd try again and find out if there isn't some way to assist you, say the 2nd room at half cost?? Is there any kind of disability advocate that handles these type of situations at Disney? I'm just trying to think of anything......

I'm sorry to hear about your physical disabilities. It would be nice if they offered handicap-accessible rooms with 2 beds, but you still could not easily fit 2 ECV's in there. From what you say it sounds like Disney offers plenty of on-site options for people with disabilities, so it doesn't seem anywhere near discrimination to me.

I also love POR, but it seems like having 2 rooms at a value (with 2 bathrooms and some privacy for mom and dad :) ) would be worth it (disability or no disability). Or like having a larger room at a deluxe would be worth the extra bucks. I'm staying at a Value resort in December and my mom and I could definitely use 2 sinks, but we know if we want that we'll have to choose to stay elsewhere. And I am NOT comparing that to a disability! It's just a luxury, as larger room size is a luxury.

I know you are frustrated, but I guess I'm just a little confused . What would you like them to do? Put 2 beds in a handi-cap accessible room for you? If that's what you want, then ask them if there is a fire code or something that would prevent that. Maybe they'll accommodate you. But you'll be really cramped with
5 people and 2 ECVs :(.

Can you walk some? How about renting one or both ECV's at the parks so that you don't need them in the room?

If you will have a vehicle, we never brought my ECV into the room. We just brought the batteries and charger.

I hope you find a way to make things work,

Michelle

What I was saying that in order to be able to fit my family in a room we need 2 rooms or have to pay for a deluxe, big bucks! What if my DH and I were in a wheelchair 24/7 and wanted to vacation at Disney with my 2 children (I will use 2 in this example to make it easier) since Disneys handicapped room only accomodate 2 people I am then forced to get 2 rooms.

If I wanted to pay for 2 rooms or a deluxe, I would..... The problem is I don't get to make that choice. It now increases my vacation cost because I have a walking disability.

I'm sure you didn't mean that to sound offensive, but no. What I am saying is that Disney needs to consider that not everybody is a perfectly heathly family of 2 adults, 2 children. Perhaps they need to consider that they need accomodations that can fit 2 disabled adults that have children! Just because we are disabled doesn't mean I can't vacation with my family. Why can't I have the same options as you????

Yes, thankfully we can. If we did just rent one on a daily basis from the park, what do we do if there are none left when we get there? What do we do when we want to go to Pleasure island or DTD? There are none to rent there.

I think it all depends on the model of the ecv because I did that one time and it didn't charge. Talk about being bummed in the morning! LOL

We can make it work, we just have to pay more money to do it is all

You did say this, and that was what I was referring to.

I'm not trying to be offensive. I just don't understand what you want them to do. I simply suggested some alternatives - asking them put 2 beds in a handicap-accessible room or going to the values or deluxes where you (or any other family) could have more space.

You brought it up, and all I want to know is what do you want them to do?

As Disney is renovating the rooms at resorts, they are putting two double beds into the handicapped accessible rooms. If you go to the FAQ at the top of the disABILITIES thread, the phone number for special services should be there.
