I'm so proud of the company that I work for right now. We just received a memo regarding what my company is doing for our employees in the areas affected by Katrina. Following are excerpts from the e-mail received by all employees:

"We have more than 1,100 employees in the greater New Orleans area who may have been directly affected by the disaster, out of about 4,000 in Louisiana. ...This is the situation as of September 1. We have 224 facilities in Louisiana; 85 in the devastated area are closed...This is a time when our customers and our employees need us, and we will continue to put together programs specifically designed to assist them.

For the employees directly affected, our continuing focus is on their safety and on helping with immediate funding and housing needs. To recap some of the steps we have taken:

The Hurricane Katrina Employee Support phone line that was set up yesterday should be used as a central point of contact for all affected employees or managers who have hurricane-related questions or needs. The number is xxx-xxxx. ...One of the principal questions received by the Support line is about pay. Until further notice, employees who work in locations that are closed will continue to receive compensation for their normally scheduled work hours. We have also made provisions for employees who receive monthly incentive compensation. Where employees are able to work, but their work location is unavailable, we will focus on matching their skills and abilities to the current business needs. If we cannot find work for those employees, we will continue to provide financial assistance until suitable work is available.
We recognize that many of our New Orleans-based employees have sustained material loss and dislocation as a result of the storm. To help those employees, we are providing an immediate $1,500 payment (non-taxable) to all employees who do not have access to their homes or have had material loss. Any employees in need should call the Hurricane Support line with those requests.
We have also identified some short-term housing opportunities and have negotiated rates for employees who need to move to temporary housing. Also, as we announced yesterday, we are contributing $1 million to the American Red Cross relief effort and will match up to $1 million of employee donations to the American Red Cross, up to a potential $3 million contribution. We are also setting up a fund for employee contributions that will be used to help our colleagues directly affected by the disaster."

I could not be more proud to work for a company who is looking at the whole picture and doing the right thing for its employees!

That's awesome. We need to hear more good stories like this.
