First we had folks renting on the Rent/Trade Board, then we had E-Bay, now apparently there's a web page with Disney discounts and codes, AND the link has been posted over on the Resorts Board---
http://www.marywaring.com/disneyhotels.htm

Apparently we're being marketed as a real steal! I guess if I wanted to rent points this would be a good thing, but I guess I'll have to sleep on it to decide. I feel like a Blue Light Special!

I'm not sure how to take this mention in the website either. I have read many of the posts concerning the rental issue and I do not want to send anyone into a tizzy based on my reply. It seems to me, however, that since the rental of points is specifically allowed, then there is nothing wrong with this being publicized.

We may all be in a situation in the future where the rental of points will at least be considered. I hope I will never reach that point, but "never say never."

Well, I guess we know where the increased demand is coming from.

I think we should put on our sandwich signs and walk around Boardwalk saying, "Will rent our home for $10 a point...."

The better alternative is, "Don't rent points"!

Quote:
"Sample deal - a five-night stay (Saturday through Thursday) in a Boardwalk Villas Studio with a Standard view in May 2001, which "costs" the DVC member 70 points. You "rent" the points for $700 and pay the DVC member directly"

Well, at they didn't promote the "low cost Sunday thru Thursday" deal! My issue with the renting is that they usually rent during the least expensive times, making it more difficult for DVC members who cannot book 11 months in advance.

Remember the laws of supply and demand. The supposed "deal" on rental points hinges on the current market condition. Once the demand goes up because of webpages like this, the price of the rentals will go up and thus make this "deal" invalid.

We always have more than enough need for our points, but if I would ever rent, it would definetly be for more than $10 a point to non-DVC member.

It costs us DVC members around $10/point (a year) to stay "at home". What is the big deal about other people renting at $10/point?. Renters don't get the flexibility and availability we DVCers get. Moreover, the renting transaction is not 100% safe for any of the 2 parties involved. These factors offset the price advantage.

The market forces won't let us get much more than $10 when renting our points. We all aknowledge the value of DVC, and that is why we bought into it, but we really should not expect to make a profit off it. If rental price were higher, then a lot of people would jump into DVC just to make money. Again, the market forces ewould drive the price down.
Thus...don't rent your points unless you need to, and if so, try to do it to your family or friends.
I see point renting as a last resource, and as such, it is a good thing for us members. What would happen if we could not rent the points and we could not use our points? Then, I am sure there would be a whole thread with people saying how great it would be to be able to rent the points.

Joe I understand your point of view, but let's look at this without blinders on. The market creats the demand. Therefor, if people are willing to pay 15.00 a point then so be it, why if need be should I rent my points for 10.00 when i can get 15.00. Also, who were we before we all joined DVC. Are we all special now. Of course I want to keep my home nice, clean and pretty, but that is no reason not to rent to outsiders. And lastly what about disney themselves, it would seem that the prices just went up again.....

Just some things to think about.

I totally agree with you. If the market says the price is $15, then so be it. Believe me, I would not complain if I rented out my points for $30/point. What I said was that at least for now, the going price seems to be around $10. I am not a renter, and I have never rented my points. I also see nothing wrong with renting out to ousiders if I find myself in the position of having to do so. My suggestion to "keep it among friends" was for those who feel that renting points out to "mere mortals" should not be allowed.
My opinion on renting points is that it is a nice advantage to have on the side when you can't do anything else with them, and if some people can take advantage of that, then I am glad for them.
