I have just gotten back from my 4th Little League game today, ugh! All 3 DS had games and middle had a double header! I am just not a good baseball Mom, I keep thinking of all of the work that needs to be done at home and work and then feel guilty for feeling guilty! I do have this poem on my wall that I bought when DS-15 was born and I try to recite it when I get like this!

Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow
For babies grow up we've learned to our sorrow
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep
Authur unknown

I also have posted on my corkboard above my desk an old Ann Landers column from when DS-15 was born about not wishing their childhoods and lives away. Helps but boy do I get antsy and then feel enormous guilt!

I remember those days and believe me, I miss every moment. My "baby" is 24 now. His baseball years were the best of my life. The grandmother, the aunt, the grandpa, the mom and the dad were there for every game from T-ball thru HighSchool. I would give anything to watch him at first base just one more time.

msmouse........ I totally agree. My "baby" is now 20 and a sophomore in college. How I would love to go back to those Little League days just one more time. Enjoy those precious days...they are gone all too quickly.

my girls are involved in cheereleading, dance and drama club. sometimes it's hard to keep up. but so worth it.

That is from The Song for a fifth child. A neighbor gave it to my mom when I was born in June 1959-can't locate my copy now but did find it on the web. It says it first appeared in Ladies HOme Journal in Oct. 1958 I always liked it even as a child, my mom kept the clipping in my baby book.

"Song for a Fifth Child"

Mother, oh mother, come shake out your cloth!
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

Oh, cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby. Babies don't keep.

Yeah - my "baby" is 22 now (he's in Vegas this weekend - eeK!) & we watched him play baseball through HS. DH & I passed a little league field today and both recalled all those years of me sitting in the stands and him coaching! This DS also played soccer thru HS & basketball through 8th grade. (Older DS was the actor in HS - I miss his performances too). So. I guess, from those of us who've "been there" - try to relax and enjoy these times!

ptcruisermom thanks for the entire poem or song. I have that part that I wrote on my wall in the hallway where I can see it every day. I purchased it at a local Hallmark where they have pretty plaques with all of the sayings on them. I like the entire poem and have printed it to tuck behind the picture so someday when I am old and gray and the kids look behind it.....they can recall the days we went looking for the 3 bears in the woods or the days Mom played catch in the front yard or the days Mom took them swimming in the lake or the ocean and we would giggle and build sand castles or the days we went puddle jumping after a big storm and Daddy had to work late!

winniedapooh you are quite welcome. I was the fifth child. 17 years difference between my oldest sister and me. I was alate inlife baby my mom was almost 41 when she had me. I was the one that stayed closest to home. My dad passed away last May 15th ( ironicallly my oldest 16th b-day) and I promised him I would take care of mom- she has since moved to an assisted living facility where she really likes it(she had never stayed by herself and was scared). This poem will always be special to me- as I hope it is to your kids.:) :grouphug:
